An expensive tome of variable quality

This is a huge and expensive hardback collection of papers written by mostly UK communication specialists. It has 41 chapters over 496 pages in six sections and is "aimed at leaders who want insight into internal communication techniques for use in both day-to-day operational and change situations, for example, and also at the communication specialist seeking shared wisdom and new ideas".

Sadly, the book does not achieve its stated aim. There are many interesting and practical chapters but they are mostly at a basic level, best suited to new practitioners. Leaders and communication specialists would be much better off spending less money to buy both "The IABC Handbook of Organizational Communication" (41 papers over 546 pages) and Bill Quirke's "Managing the Connections" (364 pages).

New communicators may like the chapters on writing, videos, presentations, better emails, intranets, writing for the web, communicating an office move, and especially the seven short papers on using social media. Yes, much of the book is about information dissemination tools and channels. Even the chapter on "creating an internal communication strategy" is more than half about tools and channels (and little about using the business strategy to inform communication strategy).

There are other chapters that are helpful - on measurement, CSR, appreciative inquiry, creating meaningful dialogue, and what makes a competent communicator. Best of all is Bill Quirke's 40 page chapter on leadership and engagement.

The seven chapters (40 pages in total) on organizational theory are a useful inclusion for new practitioners - I'm often horrified at how little my communication masters students know about human motivation. This chapter covers the likes of Maslow, Herzberg, Mayo, McGregor and McClelland (curiously misspelled in the contents and chapter heading).

The tome has 25 figures, a few tables, lots of bulleted lists and a good index. As the papers are patchy I'd suggest you check the contents before you shell out what is a significant amount of money. In fact you can buy four outstanding books by the top gurus D'Aprix, Smythe, Quirke and Holtz for the same money. It is certainly not a book that could be used as a university text, but it may be a useful book for the library of the communication department.

A comprehensive internal comms resource

Written as a collaborative wiki, this is both a weighty and deliberately loosely structured reference book with contributions from a wide cross section of internal communications and change specialists.

If you prefer your business resources to be idea-rich but a little haphazard in presentation, you'll find this useful as the content ranges widely from management models and articles on the use of pictures through to psychological theories about engagement and abstract contributions on narrative and the power of storytelling.

Interestingly, there's very little in here about so-called social media, but there's an awful lot of decent, classic and varied material for the in-house practitioner looking to deliver more than copy writing services for the boss.

It's a tad pricey so may be best to convince the powers that be to buy it for the corporate library first and foremost, but you do get original material from thought and practice leaders of the pedigree of Bill Quirke Making the Connections; Ian Buckingham Brand Engagement and mark Wright for that investment.....
