Review
'Here we have an excellent introduction to one of the most significant intellectual achievements of the twentieth century, namely Hans-Urs von Balthasar's trilogy on the transcendentals of being: beauty, goodness and truth. In that massive work the Swiss Catholic theologian unfolded the themes of God's glory and its appearance, God's dramatic history with the world and human participation in it, God's cosmic design and the ways of its revelation and human discovery. Now at three interlocking levels — that of the present book itself, that of its subject's writings, and that of the range of philosophers, theologians and artists whom von Balthasar attended to — readers will find themselves drawn into engagement with the true, the good, and the beautiful.' - Geoffrey Wainwright, Robert Earl Cushman Professor of Christian Theology, Duke Divinity School, Durham, USA. I recently started reading this book after receiving it for Christmas. I LOVE IT! Mr. Wigley has organized this book very well, provides a good blend of historical information with the descriptions of Balthasar's ideas, and (unlike Balthasar, it seems) is very easy to understand.
I didn't have the money to buy all of Balthasar's books as a begin to do some extensive research and writing on the interplay between theatre and christianity for a thesis. I got this book so that I would have a better idea what was in each volume of Balthasar's and maybe buy just one. This resource has been wonderful. Well done!
