The Birds of America is one of the best known natural history books ever produced and also the most valuable - a complete set sold at auction in December 2010 for GBP7.3 million, which is a world record for a book. First published in double elephant size (approximately a metre tall) in the first half of the nineteenth century, it is famous for its stunning life-size illustrations of birds set within landscaped backgrounds. The book was issued in parts over 11 years and only around 200 completed sets were ever produced. Less than 120 of these survive today, locked away in museums, galleries and private collections around the world. To create this edition of Audubon's masterpiece, the Natural History Museum's own original edition was disbound and each of the 435 beautiful hand-coloured prints was specially photographed. The artworks are accompanied by the scientific descriptions that were used in the original The Birds of America.

About the Author
John James Audubon was a naturalist and painter and is considered one of the greatest bird artists of all time. Born in Haiti in 1785, he spent much of his life travelling North America observing, catching and drawing birds and animals in remarkable detail. Using a variety of materials to create a highly dramatic style, he painted almost 500 species of the 700 or so regularly occurring North American bird species. He also painted other animals but it is his life-size illustrations of birds that he is most famous for.

Wonderful book
By SC/HH
I was initially dissuaded from purchasing this book because there were no reviews available and I had not seen it in person, but it is a gorgeous book that cannot be beat for this price. The book is fully colored and printed on a matte rather than glossy paper and the reproductions are wonderful. This is a massive volume enclosed in a slipcase, and the book itself is very well made. The content of the book is superb, and Audubon's birds come to life in this edition. The colors are vibrant and show the true beauty of nature.
I have not compared it to the significantly more expensive "Baby Elephant Folio," but this edition is wonderful in itself at a price that cannot be beat. If you are a fan of Audubon and wish to have a complete edition of the Birds of America, I highly recommended this book.

Birds of America Revisited
By Audubon Collector
This volume is tremendous in print clarity and color reproduction. Many of the birds look as though they were hand colored.
The prints are arranged on single pages and printed on a flat to semi glossy paper in the same order as the Havell Double Elephant Folio. The combination of rich color and paper quality make this the best reproduction that I have seen to date.
You can clearly see the fine gradation between tones of white-grey-black (aquatint) as in the originals. The tree limbs and tree bark have great sharpness and color. I have not found any print that has noticeable flaws in print quality, color richness or ink distribution. Yellow warblers are yellow; blacks are black. I've compared the colors to the DEF at LSU and the University of Pittsburg and they are amazingly accurate. All-in-all a great volume.
I also have several other volumes of the Birds of America produced throughout the years including a recent purchase of the Abbeville Press Baby Elephant Folio but none compare to the richness of color seen here.

EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTION 4 EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTRY
By Jeff Raymond
I had no prior knowledge of the history of this book (being from Australia), it was only a chance glimpse of some close-ups of the artist's work in a nature documentary that caused me to search this out. Because there have been myriad versions published, it took me a while to decide on this one from the publishing house Sterling. I can find nothing to complain about, the book's nearly 450 large pages are totally devoted to stunning reproductions, one to each page, with only an index at the back and a brief 2 page forward at the front. The paper is a beautiful soft matt card which is totally sympathetic to the water-based ink & wash colors of the originals.
The state of the art digital scans (or photography) direct from the originals reveals sharp detail and harmonious balance of tone, from hard blacks to delicate creams. The order of the plates does not seem to follow species lines so there is surprise and variety at each page turn. It is the sort of book to give years of pleasure and is idealy suited to opening at random as the book in whole is too much to take in all at once.
Each and every page is a perfectly planned & realised work of art and it is a pleasure to take a magnifying glass and scan the appreciative eye over the finely detailed images within. A lovely calming way to spend 15-30 mins.
How one individual was able to do all that trecking & searching in the wilds, observing, hunting, drawing all those birds and then produce so many prints of such equal un-rushed beauty is a mind spin in itself.
