The International Critical Commentary: Isaiah 1-5, by Hugh Williamson

Hugh Williamson's Isaiah 1-5 is the first of three volumes in a important new commentary on Isiah 1-27. For over one hundred years International Critical Commentaries have had a special place among works on the Bible. They bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis - linguistic, textual, archaeological, historical, literary, and theological - to help the reader understand the meaning of the books of the Old and New Testaments. The new commentaries continue this tradition. All new evidence now available is incorporated and new methods of study are applied. The authors are of the highest international standing. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought.

Review
'ICC has been the supreme English language Bible commentary series throughout the twentieth century, and the recent additions to it...maintain its reputation as the commentary of choice, the first volume to be pulled from the shelf when a really tricky issue of exegesis or exposition is involved or an authoritative survey of historical and recent scholarly interpretation is sought on any particular passage.' (Professor James Dunn, University of Durham)

it doesn't get any better than this
By Jordan Pariah
In 1912, George B. Gray published what may have been one of the single greatest scholastic commentaries on the book of Isaiah in modern history as part of the International Critical Commentary series. You can download the first volume (Isaiah 1-27) for free at archive.org. It was one of the most comprehensive critical commentaries of its time on that text. Aside from working with almost every possible minutae of the Hebrew, it brought other ancient languages and textual witnesses to bear on its analysis and provided keenly insightful and erudite judgments in its text-critical formulations. For the past 100 years, this has been one of the primary authorities by which the greats of our time have turned again and again. And few since have surpassed it. However, time does move on. And it has brought new discoveries and better advancements in the fields of biblical languages, linguistics, archeology, and the like. Gray's volume, though eminently helpful, is now out-of-date and tragically misleading. H. G. Williamson's volume in the ICC series is meant to be an up-to-date replacement for that text. And it does the job admirably! It works, for instance, with the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were not available to Gray, and which shed light on many of Isaiah's textual problems. It continues the tradition of lengthy and descriptive notes on the Hebrew language with analysis of Greek, Aramaic, Arabic, and Akkadian, but does so in a very readable and open way, which cannot be said of Gray, who clumped all his notes together in a never-ending paragraph at the end of each section, utilized extremely small font sizes, and provided as little explanation of the textual difficulties as possible. Unlike Gray, who forced the Hebrew text into artificial poetic structures based on a faulty understanding of Hebrew poetry (another area that has developed substantially over the past century), Williamson has a much better grasp of the means and methods by which the Hebrew poetry communicates and uses that to give us a better understanding of the form and content of the text. Though the interpretation chosen by Gray is often followed by Williamson in his translation, Williamson clearly does so for his own reasons, which are spelled out completely. And unlike Gray, he does not cut out pieces of text or add them in order to make his translation fit an artificial poetic structure. There is little doubt in my mind that this book (and any others that Williamson completes for ICC) will now be the commentary that others turn to for the next 100 years when they want to grapple with the words of the text itself. It is certainly expensive. But for those with the knowledge and skills to work with Isaiah in its original language, there is nothing better. Those who are more interested in theological or canonical reflections should look elsewhere. But even those who are "Hebrew Lite" can benefit greatly from the exegetical portion of his commentary.

What we would normally expect from Williamson
By Commentary Surveyor
Hugh Williamson (Ezra, Nehemiah, Word Biblical Commentary) has contributed the first commentary of three on Isaiah 1-27 for the ICC series in Isaiah 1-5 (T. & T. Clark) at the same time that John Goldingay and David Payne have covered the back end (Isaiah 40-55 Vol 1: A Critical and Exegetical Commentary (International Critical Commentary) (Hardcover) (International Critical Commentary). At 650 pages (compared to 900 pages total for the two 40-55 volumes), this is going to be one whopper of coverage for one book (seven volumes at $90-110.00 per retail).
