Steven Shakespeare is Lecturer in Philosophy at Liverpool Hope University. He is the author of Kierkegaard, Language and the Reality of God (Ashgate, 2001) and Radical Orthodoxy. A Critical Introduction (SPCK 2007). He is also coauthor, with Hugh Rayment-Pickard, of The Inclusive God. Reclaiming Theology for an Inclusive Church (Canterbury, 2006).

About the Author
Baruch J. Schwartz is the A. M. Shlansky senior lecturer in Biblical History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research centers on Biblical religion and law, the Torah, classical prophetic literature and medieval biblical exegesis. He is the author of The Holiness Legislation (Jerusalem: Magnes Press, 1999) and of the commentary on Leviticus in The Jewish Study Bible (New York: Oxford University Press, 2004). He was an editor of the volume Texts, Temples and Traditions: A Tribute to Menahem Haran (Winona Lake, Ind.: Eisenbrauns, 1996).

Naphtali S. Meshel, M.A., teaches at the Department of Bible and at the "Amirim" Program for Outstanding Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is currently working on his doctoral dissertation titled "Ritual as Language" at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Jeffrey Stackert is Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He is the author of Rewriting the Torah: Literary Revision in Deuteronomy and the Holiness Legislation (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2007).

Excellent foundational book

I recently entered the healthcare marketing space at the beginning of this year, and came across this title while looking for something that would give me a comprehensive primer on the industry.
I'm really glad I decided to pick this one up.
Even though the focus of the book is on developing and deploying CRM and PRM programs, the author (Haimowitz's) clear explanation of each of the steps and components actually gave me a much wider understanding of the industry at large that extended into the general pharma and healthcare landscape.
He's an excellent distiller and reductionist of an incredibly complicated field, and I think it's the main reason this book was so easy to absorb and learn from. His explanations are immediately put into context or demonstrated through an example, and I believe that's why most of what I've read is still with me.
If you're looking for a good primer or 101 on Healthcare/Pharmaceutical Marketing, or even if you want to understand how the brighter minds are developing and running CRM and PRM programs, you should check this book out.

Excellent Overview, Handbook & Reference -- applicable across many industries

Dr. Haimowitz has written a practical and indispensable handbook and reference for Relationship Marketing practitioners, managers, and newcomers. While the focus is on Relationship Marketing (RM) in the Healthcare industry, I estimate that more than half of the material is directly applicable to other industries such as Packaged Goods and Financial Services.

One of the strengths of Dr. Haimowitz's book is that it assumes no prior knowledge of Relationship Marketing and therefore avoids unnecessary jargon or buzzwords. Instead, he provides an excellent, plainspoken overview of Relationship Marketing concepts, strategies, tools, and techniques while also offering specific case studies that are directly applicable in today's Healthcare environment. In particular the book includes interviews with industry experts (all with over 15 years experience). These interviews offer invaluable, first hand insight into the challenges and opportunities unique to modern Healthcare Relationship Marketing. Dr. Haimowitz has also wisely decided to focus less on cataloguing specific current RM tactics, but instead on explaining the key concepts, principles, and strategies that will remain consistent even in a rapidly changing business environment.

The overall tone is practical and analytical and the chapters on Analytics, Operations, and Measurement may indeed be the strongest. However, even the formal formulas and equations are presented and explained clearly and concisely.

In summary, this book is highly recommended as an important addition to the library of any RM professional regardless of role (e.g. Strategy, Media, Operations, or Analytics). While the case studies and tactics are focused on the Healthcare industry the RM concepts, principles, tools and techniques are broadly applicable across multiple industries.

I am a fresh college grad and recently landed my first job in the healthcare marketing industry. This book was extremely helping in providing me with clear and easy to understand framework of Relationship Marketing concepts in the healthcare industry. The author breakdowns each area of pharmaceutical Relationship Marketing design and measurement and provides an easy to follow overview of the pharmaceutical marketing landscape. After the end of each chapter, there are review questions and exercises which are helpful in testing and reinforcing your knowledge of the preceding material in different scenarios. I would recommend this book to anyone new to the healthcare marketing industry or those who may not have been exposed to the modern disciplines of relationship marketing.

Professor Lauren Pristas is Professor of Theology in the department of Theology & Philosophy at Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. Following publication of four leading and well-received articles on the processes by which the 1970 Roman Missal was edited, in 2006 she was awarded the first Society of St Catherine of Siena Research Fellowship in Liturgical Theology and this proposed title represents the results of her research arising from the fellowship.

Professor Pristas has written here the definitive study of the Collects (what some refer to as the "opening prayer") of the old and new Roman Missals. She shows, patiently, carefully, and calmly, how very different (in most cases) the new Collects are from the old Collects, and how the redactors of the Pauline Missal explicitly admitted, in documents well cited by Pristas, that they were operating on the basis of a different theological understanding, one suited to modern man. Although her study acquires a reasonably size because she is looking at a fairly narrow band of evidence -- the Collect is, after all, only one small part of a larger whole -- the result is a rather devastating critique of the idea that the new Missal is in continuity with the doctrine and praxis of the old Missal. Yes, there are points of generic overlap, and the form and matter of the Sacrament remain, but "the devil's in the details," as one might say. Basically, if you want to keep holding to the illusion of continuity, no one will stop you; but if the truth of the matter is what you are after, reading books like this one and Dom Alcuin Reid's "Organic Development" will help you to see why the liturgical reform was a moment of stark rupture and discontinuity, and why we desperately need to heal that breach.

Having read all the precursor articles, I have waiting for this text for what seems like forever. It was worth the wait. Dr. Pristas approaches the topic in a neutral, but clear fashion. I hope that people who read the text will get the full picture of the kind of damage that was done in the revisions of the collects. Can't wait for volume II.

A valuable resource

Having a pre-highlighted Bible is a wonderful way to quickly see which passages may pertain to the topics of poverty and social justice. Although I'm associated with a protestant tradition, I highly value the catholic inclusion of texts the protestants rarely look at. I'd hoped for more commentary by either the editorial team or by faith-based leaders in social work, but there is very little of that.

Shadows of Avalon

Good show; wonderful story.
I must say this book was very hard to put down even when sleep called desperately.
While the eighth Dr. is not my favorite, I purchased this book as the story line mentions Avalon of which I am most interested in.
To my delight Paul Cornell has written this book so that it reads like a fourth Doctor adventure and that was a welcomed surprise.
The intertwining of the Brigadier, dimension shifting, fairies, mages, et. al. is a rare mixture that is a treat for the mind and has you constantly wondering what will happen next. The problems and possibilities all mix well and make you wonder, "what if".
All 'round a must read. Bravo!

The TARDIS is destroyed.The Doctor finds himself in the Kingdom of Avalon, separated from his companions. He is not alone,however. Soon the Time Lord meets an old friend, Brigadier General Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. Together, they enter the court of Mab, Queen Regent of the Catuvelauni.

Meanwhile, Fitz and Compassion have landed in the realm of the Fair Folk, a few miles North as the dragon flies. They believe the Doctor dead, and Avalon about to erupt in war. Confirming their suspicions, Fitz and Compassion discover a nuclear warhead mounted on the wall of the castle.

This is great Doctor Who. Tragedy! Romance! Betrayal! We also see that the Doctor's past actions have consequences both unintended and unforseen. Oh, yes. There are also a pair of Gallifreyan assassins. Along the way, Compassion meets her destiny, and the stage is set for a recurring plotline. This book has everything.

Usually, I end with a quotation from the book I review. This time there are two:

"'Young man!' cried the old woman, trying to stop her bonnet from flying off her head. 'Wait! Who are you? What are you doing here?'

The Doctor grinned at her. 'I'm the Doctor! And I'm here to save the world!'"

The Great Escape!

At first, I thought I wasn't going to like this book. Its initial premise seemed too much like the 1989 television adventure, Battlefield. It certainly has similar elements: the Arthurian legend (although Avalon is pre-Arthur), a missing nuclear missile, the Brigadier, and Doris. A homage to Battlefield is not an image which conjures much hope for this as a piece of fiction, since Ben Aaronovitch's story was a disappointment after his excellent Rememberance of the Daleks. However, I've discovered that this novel doesn't leave you after you've finished reading.
The Brigadier here is quite different from the character of the same name in Mark Gatiss' Last of the Gaderene. This is not to say that either of these authors have got him wrong. In Gatiss' book, the Brigadier is the character that we knew and loved from thirty years ago. The Shadows of Avalon presents the Brigadier as he is now (well, now as in the future - it's a temporal thing). For one thing, Lethbridge-Stewart has been promoted to General. However, everyone still calls him 'Brigadier'. For a moment, you can imagine that Paul Cornell has been delving into the files of Police Squad, ready to reveal that Lethbridge-Stewart was christened 'Brigadier' (like Frank Drebin's (sic) first name was always 'Lieutenant'), but he resists this. Due to events in past novels ('Happy Endings'), the Brigadier has also been rejuvenated, and there are some interesting scenes with him and an aged Munro. But although the Brigadier is youthful, he is far from happy, for his wife has died. This is on the back cover blurb, so it's not a spoiler.
So, the Brigadier finds himself in the mythical land of Avalon, along with the Doctor. Avalon's home to the Catuvelauni, a Celtic tribe who fled there from the Romans. Also living there are the Faeries - don't groan - who are the original inhabitants. These Fair Folk bear little resemblance to popular images of fairies, and are more familiar in a malignant sort of way. With their presence, it would certainly seem that Avalon is a good bolt-holt for people running away from things, and it's as good an explanation of dragons as you're likely to find in the Doctor Who universe. It's not long before the Brigadier is caught in the midst of a civil war between these two peoples. Shadows of Avalon retains the contemporary political feel of recent EDAs, since this does resemble Kosovo at times.
There was a great deal of fuss prior to the publication of the Shadows of Avalon due to Cornell's decision to portray a black Time Lord. In this aspect, it also resounds with Battlefield, since that story had a black woman as Brigadier. Initially, I thought Paul Cornell had failed in his good intentions, since the only explicit reference to Gandar's skin tone is one character describing him as a 'darkie'. However, this comes from a character whose perceptions have been affected by his living in our society. No one refers to Gandar as 'black' on Gallifrey, because his skin tone isn't an issue there. Most of the time he and his fellow agent, Cavis, dress up in disguises to perform their duties as agents, whether that means wearing monsters suits or the full Celtic look. Like every other character in this book however, Gandar isn't static - like the Brigadier, he develops and evolves with a great deal of compassion. Paul Cornell deals with racial conflict within these pages with a high degree of sophistication.
So, like a lot of Doctor Who books nowadays, Shadows of Avalon opens at a relatively gentle, some might even say dull, pace. As usual, we're introduced to a lot of new characters who require some time to empathize with. But if you leave your copy of Shadows on the 08:47 from London Bridge to Hastings after scanning just a few opening pages, then you'd be missing the point. Doctor Who has graduated from the regular twenty five minute cliffhanger. Now the books tend to build up to a barnstorming end - and this is where Shadows of Avalon excels. The ending is a bungee jump into oblivion, with adrenaline even approaching excess.
There are a few things which jar - one of the greatest elements of Doctor Who disappears with a whimper rather than a bang, and maybe the two Gallifreyan agents are a little too groovy to be taken seriously, like something out of Buffy. But then again, one of the agents is preordained Cavis, which I think must derive from Latin (what was that mosaic in Pompeii? 'Cave Canem'?). When you think about the Latin elements of the story, it soon becomes clear that there couldn't be a more appropriate setting for this story. There are ironies within ironies, until they alchemise into gold. Judging by the reaction of one of the characters, the Enemy has to be feared. This is a most stimulating novel, one which will stay with me for a long time. It's part of the ongoing story, stopping off here and there, like The Armageddon Factor of twenty year ago, and resounds with such quality as Edge of Darkness. These two aren't name-checked by Cornel, but I think I can see them. The Great Escape is certainly referred to, but given the nature of this novel, it's hardly gratuitous. Shadows of Avalon seems to resemble a classical work: there's a justification for every idea here. And combined with elements from Lawrence Miles' story arc? Sweeter than eye of newt.
Of course, one can only imagine the Doctor's reaction to seeing Ian Chesterton in a German POW camp, but that's another story. Maybe it's the beginning. Whatever. I think that we can certainly let Paul Cornell get away with this one.
