A Good Historical Overview

Depoortere's work is, for the most part, the sort of thing you'll already know about if you want to read it. It deals with both the history of so-called "death of God" theology (following the proclamation in Nietzsche's "The Gay Science") and with an overview of the Western (though, more properly speaking, /Latin/) concept of God, with special attention paid to the classical attributes of omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence.
Depoortere's analysis starts from a strong premise: Those attributes, which make up the God of "classical theism" are inseparable from Christian theology. There is no real tradition of a God within Christianity that is not also the God of classical theism. The book largely takes the form of a defense of this thesis and a history of these philosophical doctrines about God (as opposed to theological ones about the Trinity, person, etc.). He makes very little in the way of a case for how these doctrines led to such incoherence as to justify the claim that "God is dead", rather, he appears to take such theology as a given. This is the first of two primary weaknesses in the book.
The second weakness is the Latin-centric bent of the work. Coming out of a century where Greek theology regained a position of preëminence in the Western academy, his lack of attention to Greek-speaking writers after Augustine is rather glaring. Such a focus could be due to the limits of his scholarship, but no excuse is made for this. While a claim that they had little bearing on the "death of God" as seen in 19th and 20th century Europe would be correct, including them may have also posed the difficulty of rounding that picture and having to propose another possible "solution" to the dilemma presented. Given current research, this is a notable lacuna, but may be excused as it is common to most writers of "death of God" theology.
The other complaint I have is a stylistic and fussy one. Depoortere's devotion to gender-neutral language is such that references to the Godhead as "he" in his references are always followed by "[sic!]". The effect is insistent, shrill and comic. Depoortere obviously has a fine mind, and to see it wasting its time fussing about whether or not a scholar follows thousands of years of tradition and refers to God in the masculine is pitiful. (Similarly, if someone wrote a book on "feminist theology" and sought to add "[sic!]" after every mention of the Divine as feminine...)
This all said, Depoortere's historical overview is excellent if taken within its inherent limitations. Certain sections lean too heavily on peculiar sources, but the overall picture on these topics is insightful. The second and third chapters in particular are definitely worth the effort. Depoortere's prose is easy on the eye and can be read very quickly; he presents his information and arguments clearly, and manages to fit in ~180pp what would take many academic writers 300+ pages. If you are at all interested in "death of God" theology or the history of the philosophical doctrine of God in the Latin West, I would thoroughly recommend the work.
