There is a general consensus that the Fourth Gospel underwent two editions. The second edition originated when chapter 21 as added and certain revisions were made in chapters 1-20 by an editor in the Christian community of Ephesus in order to present the Gospel to Gentile Christians and perhaps attendantly to legitimate it for canonization. Waetjen examines John's gospel by engaging in a close reading of various units of the Gospel from the perspective of a two-level drama that presents two narrative worlds within the literary structure of the Gospel. Out of his readings of the texts, one of the major and provocative conclusions Waetjen draws is that Lazarus is the Beloved Disciple of Jesus in chapters 1-20. John, the son of Zebedee, is intimated to play the role of the Beloved Disciple not only in chapter 21, but throughout the Gospel. In other words, the editor of chapter 21 has concluded that John (based on the title that the gospel already bears), is the Beloved Disciple and project that backwards from chapter 21 throughout the previous 20 chapters. Waetjen's thorough scholarship and his attention to detail in his original readings challenge traditional readings of John's Gospel, providing fresh insights into the Gospel.

Gospel of the Beloved Disciple: A Work in Two Editions

Waetjen is one of the two best writing on the New Testament today. Sociologically, linguistically, and in every other domain, he sheds light. The fine attention to detail never overshadows his treatment of "the big picture."
This book is not for the faint-hearted!! Plan on just a pages each day. It is the literary equivalent of fine chocolate and takes some reflection time to savor the multiple theses. You will never see the Book of John, Jesus of the Galilee, or the period in which the early church grew in the same way again. This book was written by a critical mind for those who want to do genuine intellectual hard work.

The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple

Herman Waetjen's book THE GOSPEL OF THE BELOVED DISCIPLE: A WORK IN TWO EDITIONS makes heavy demands even on the theologically trained reader. Some of the words he uses are not even in my American Heritage Dictionary. Nevertheless, the effort to plow through this book is well worth it. He makes a cogent case for Lazarus being the Beloved Disciple, but still does not have this reviewer convinced. Why would Lazarus be clearly identified by name in John chapters 11 and 12, while throughout the Gospel, the person designated "the Beloved Disciple," or "that other disciple" is always left unnamed? It seems his identity is deliberately concealed. I find more convincing W.'s thesis of an Alexandrian origin for the first edition of the Gospel, and Ephesus as the locale of the final redaction. Apart from these issues, the exegesis has much to offer, as well as the placing of the Fourth Gospel in the context of the cultural, religious and philosophical currents of its era.

Wonderfully balanced, with inspired explanations

By being balanced I mean the book can be used to challenge and inspire the scholar, which I am not, and the theologically educated layperson, which I am. Professor Watejen uses Greek quotes frequently, but always with translation. He makes references to constructs of Greek grammar, but again always with explanations.
His ability to move between the background of the life of Jesus and the later 'world of the gospel narrator,' provides a wonderful way of understanding the complex Gospel of John. His method of hypothesizing and exploring the implications of two editions of the Gospel is very clarifying for difficult themes in the Gospel, for example, the criticism in the Gospel of 'the Jews,' as well as the several titles and metaphors used to describe Jesus in the Gospel.
