About the Author
Brendan Wolfe is a past President and Secretary of the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society, and Executive Editor of the Journal of Inklings Studies. A DPhil candidate in church history at the University of Oxford, he is a regular contributor to the Bryn Mawr Classical Review and other publications.
Judith Wolfe is a Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford University, and will take up a post as Teaching Fellow in Theology at St John's College, Oxford in late 2011. She is author of the forthcoming Heidegger's Secular Eschatology (OUP), as well as numerous essays on the intersection of theology and philosophy, and theology and literature. A past President and Secretary of the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society, Dr Wolfe is also founding General Editor of the Journal of Inklings Studies (inklings-studies.com).

About the Author
Paul T. Steele and Tom Beasor are negotiators of long experience who have all too often seen a negotiator talk at the wrong moment, miss opportunities, or ruin a promising situation by taking the wrong approach. A major influence in the design of this book has been their experience in running over 1000 seminars and conferences on negotiation all over the world. Apart from extensive lecturing experience, they have also worked as consultants for many organizations in both the public and private sectors. A "formal" analysis of kinship terms is a method employed ny ethnographers to compare the kinship system of any given society with one of the six conventionally recognized kinship systems worldwide.
There are very specific culturally patterned and expected behaviors that every society adopts in relation to post-marital residence, rules of descent, kinship terminology and incest prohibitions. These patterns are socially conditioned and eventually produce either of the six knishp systems. A close reading of the biblical textual evidence in light of Syro-Palestinian archaeology allows ut to conclude that the kinship system of ancient Israel was Normal Hawaiian. Furthermore, the internal logic and structure of Leviticus 18 becomes clear once we recognize that descent is not biological but jural in nature. Reading Leviticus 18 with this idea in view, we find that a Normal Hawaiian kinship system is reflected in both the Genesis incest narratives and the jual-legal form of Leviticus 18. A hierarchy of kinship becomes transparent in the form and structure of Leviticus 18. In particular, we see in this form that wives and mothers were treated as heads of family in biblical law and endowed with spousal and parental rights and authority over every other family member, not only in incest laws, but in all matters. The jural authority of mothers and wives is structurally represented as second only to that of Yahweh.

About the Author
Agatha Christie, the acknowledged ‘Queen of Detective Fiction’ (The Observer) was born in Torquay in 1890. During the First World War she worked as a hospital dispenser, and it was here that she gleaned the working knowledge of various poisons that was to prove so useful in her detective stories. Her first novel was The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which introduced Hercule Poirot to the world. This was published in 1920 (although in fact she had written it during the war) and was followed over the next six years by four more detective novels and a short story collection. However, it was not until the publication of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd that Agatha Christie’s reputation was firmly established. This novel, with its complex plot and genuinely shocking conclusion, attracted considerable public attention and has since been acknowledged by many experts as a masterpiece. In 1930 the sharp-witted spinster sleuth Miss Marple made her first appearance in Murder at the Vicarage. In all, Agatha Christie published 80 crime novels and short story collections. The brilliance of Christie’s plots, and her enduring appeal, have led to a number of dramatisations of her work on radio, television and film. In 1930 she was one of a number of crime writers asked to contribute a chapter to a mystery, Behind the Screen, that was broadcast on BBC radio on 21st June that year. More recently, June Whitfield portrayed Miss Marple on BBC Radio 4, whilst John Moffat starred as Hercule Poirot. On screen, Peter Ustinov, David Suchet, Margaret Rutherford, Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie have all memorably played Agatha Christie’s famous sleuths. As her play The Mousetrap (the longest-running play in the history of the theatre) testifies, Agatha Christie’s detective stories are likely to appeal for a long time to come. Agatha Christie was awarded a CBE in 1956 and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1971. She died in 1976.

A Good Historical Overview

Depoortere's work is, for the most part, the sort of thing you'll already know about if you want to read it. It deals with both the history of so-called "death of God" theology (following the proclamation in Nietzsche's "The Gay Science") and with an overview of the Western (though, more properly speaking, /Latin/) concept of God, with special attention paid to the classical attributes of omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence.

Depoortere's analysis starts from a strong premise: Those attributes, which make up the God of "classical theism" are inseparable from Christian theology. There is no real tradition of a God within Christianity that is not also the God of classical theism. The book largely takes the form of a defense of this thesis and a history of these philosophical doctrines about God (as opposed to theological ones about the Trinity, person, etc.). He makes very little in the way of a case for how these doctrines led to such incoherence as to justify the claim that "God is dead", rather, he appears to take such theology as a given. This is the first of two primary weaknesses in the book.

The second weakness is the Latin-centric bent of the work. Coming out of a century where Greek theology regained a position of preëminence in the Western academy, his lack of attention to Greek-speaking writers after Augustine is rather glaring. Such a focus could be due to the limits of his scholarship, but no excuse is made for this. While a claim that they had little bearing on the "death of God" as seen in 19th and 20th century Europe would be correct, including them may have also posed the difficulty of rounding that picture and having to propose another possible "solution" to the dilemma presented. Given current research, this is a notable lacuna, but may be excused as it is common to most writers of "death of God" theology.

The other complaint I have is a stylistic and fussy one. Depoortere's devotion to gender-neutral language is such that references to the Godhead as "he" in his references are always followed by "[sic!]". The effect is insistent, shrill and comic. Depoortere obviously has a fine mind, and to see it wasting its time fussing about whether or not a scholar follows thousands of years of tradition and refers to God in the masculine is pitiful. (Similarly, if someone wrote a book on "feminist theology" and sought to add "[sic!]" after every mention of the Divine as feminine...)

This all said, Depoortere's historical overview is excellent if taken within its inherent limitations. Certain sections lean too heavily on peculiar sources, but the overall picture on these topics is insightful. The second and third chapters in particular are definitely worth the effort. Depoortere's prose is easy on the eye and can be read very quickly; he presents his information and arguments clearly, and manages to fit in ~180pp what would take many academic writers 300+ pages. If you are at all interested in "death of God" theology or the history of the philosophical doctrine of God in the Latin West, I would thoroughly recommend the work.

Rev. Dr. Liz Carmichael has given us a treasure of insights into friendship as a lens to understanding Christian love. Not only does Liz provide an outstanding scholarly appreciation of the concept of friendship from classical literature to contemporary society, but she also shares her deep personal spirituality of friendship. This book is a must read for all Christians and indeed all children of God who seek to grow in their friendship with God and others.
