Good for a Sense of Classification

A useful classification from normal market to sharp dealing to scam to fraud. According ot the author, most problems one is likely to encounter are not frauds but scams that work by misdirection. In these cases, there is careful attention (in the fine print) to spell out what you are getting and so although not initially evident, full information is provided in a form in which you as the buyer are not likely to register and understand. So, scams are not technically frauds in a legal sense. The differentiation between sharp dealing and scams is also useful. The book is a bit dated due to changes in technology used for business communications but the patterns of the schemes are likely forever. It is worth reading to develop a sense of classification and to avoid the error of calling something a fraud that feels like fraud and has the same effect as fraud but is technically legal and so is better called an "unusual practice".

About the Author
One of Canada's most prolific researchers, Professor Burke's work has focused on the relationship between the work environment and individual and organizational health. He was the Founding Editor of the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences and has served on the editorial boards of more than a dozen journals. He has served as Director of the PhD. Programme at Schulich, and as Associate Dean for Research. He has participated in research conferences in North and South America, the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. Professor Burke earned his PhD from the University of Michigan and is Professor Emeritus of Organizational Behavior. He has published over 500 journal articles and edited or co-edited 27 books with a variety of publishers. He has participated in over 300 management development programs as well as serving as a consultant on organizational effectiveness issues for private and public sector organizations. His views on management and organizations have also appeared in various media. Edward C. Tomlinson is an associate professor of management and Mulwick Scholar in the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University. He received his Ph.D. from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. His primary research interests include interpersonal trust, behavioral integrity, and deviant workplace behavior. His research has been published in journals including Academy of Management Review, International Journal of Conflict Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Management Education. He currently serves on the inaugural editorial board of Journal of Trust Research. Cary L. Cooper, CBE, is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health, Lancaster University Management School at Lancaster University, England. He is the author of over 100 books and 400 scholarly articles, and is a frequent contributor to national newspapers, TV and radio. He is currently Founding Editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Editor in Chief of the medical journal Stress & Health. He is past President of the British Academy of Management, is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and one of the first UK based Fellows of the (American) Academy of Management. Professor Cooper is also the President of the Institute of Welfare Officers, President of ISMA, President of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, President of RELATE and Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences. In 2001, Cary was awarded a CBE by the Queen in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his contribution to organizational health.

In recent years there has been a tendency among certain scholars to claim that little can be known about pre-exilic Israel, because the Old Testament was only compiled in the post-exilic period (for example Philip Davies, Thomas Thompson, Neils Peter Lemche). One scholar (Lemche) has even claimed that the Old Testament is a Hellenistic work.

The purpose of this book is to argue that this is an extreme and untenable position and that, though much of the Old Testament was indeed edited in the exilic or post-exilic period, many of the underlying sources used go back to the pre-exilic period. When critically analyzed these sources can shed much light on the pre-exilic period.

This important work is the product of a team of seventeen international scholars, no fewer than five of whom are Fellows of the British Academy. None of the chapters has previously been published.

Some of the essays here explore how these vocabularies and symbols have influenced, or resonate with, events such as the massacre of Jews in Jedwabne, Poland (1941), the Rwandan Massacre (1994), the tragedy at Columbine High School (1999) and the emergence of the "Phineas Priesthood" of white supremacists in North America. Other contributors examine how themes of martyrology, sacrifice and the messianic continue to circulate and mutate in literature, music, drama and film. The collective conclusion is that it is not possible to control biblical and religious violence by simply identifying canonical trouble-spots, then fencing them off with barbed wire or holding peace summits around them.

Nor is it always possible to draw clear lines between problem and non-problem texts, witnesses and perpetrators, victims and aggressors or "reality" and "art".

Historical Contexts of the Apostolic Fathers' Writings

If you are an aficionado of the early New Testament Church from the mid-first century (which I am convinced is the approximate date of the Didache) and would like to know the historical context of various writings of the Apostolic Fathers, this book is for you. It's accessible, yet scholarly, and chock full of relevant information. If you love the earliest New Testament Church Fathers, get this book. I enjoyed reading the book and it's a keeper as a reference guide.

Beyond Definitive...

Not so much another retelling of a year of "Doctor Who" as the ultimate reference guide to Season 12 of the series, "Doctor Who: The Scripts, Tom Baker 1974/5" tells virtually everything you could want to know about the production and execution of "Doctor Who" in the first year of Tom Baker's tenure as the Doctor. Included here are the scripts (complete with changes made during shooting) for all 20 episodes across the 5 stories of the year, story histories, production notes, casting choices, transmission information, music notes, prop histories and inventories, scene sketches and maps, reproductions of newspaper clippings, notes on potential but unmade stories, changes made for American TV, audience reaction polls, and a ton of footnoting for just about every reason imaginable.
More than any other behind-the-scenes science fiction book I've read, this one really tells you what tough choices and concessions had to be made, why they chose person A over person B, what got cut for budgetary reasons (a common problem with Doctor Who) and what concessions (or lack thereof) were made for continuity. This book is a massive undertaking, and, indeed, authorship is spread between numerous people. If there is a question you want answered about Season 12 of Doctor Who, the odds are really good it's in here somewhere.
While I find it hard to recommend this book to the casual Doctor Who fan, it's invaluable to the die-hard Whovian or the student of film or TV production. This is simply the finest production book I've read and I dearly hope to see them tackle other seasons in the same way in the future.

Not just the scripts, but plenty of additional information

This is a collection of the scripts from Season 12 of Doctor Who, Tom Baker's first season. When one encounters this sort of material, it's worthwhile to see how much value-added there is. Is this just a simple reproduction of the scripts, or is there a significant amount of additional material? I am pleased to report that there is. For starters, the scripts themselves indicate the changes between the camera scripts and what actually made it on the air. But besides that, there is a season overview that discusses the casting of Tom Baker, the addition of Harry Sullivan as a character, and how the season was planned.
Then, with the individual scripts, the book provides background along the lines of the DWM Archive features, covering the development of the scripts, the production team, the production details, and a brief critique.
There are also numerous footnotes associated with the scripts, and my chief complaint with the book is that these are stuck at the end of each episode rather than at the bottom of individual pages, necessitating either a lot of flipping back and forth or a good memory if you choose to wait until after reading the episode to see what the footnotes say.
However, that's basically a quibble on what is an excellent book and a significant addition to my Doctor Who collection.

Alot of people ask "why a script book?" I wondered myself until I got it.
It includes the complete shooting scripts including dialog & scenarios not used in the finished product.
It also gives behind the scenes insight to the filming of Tom Baker (Doctor #4's) First Season as the Doctor.
If you are a fan of the show, I would highly recommend it to you!

Revelation Demystified

This thin volume is hardly thin on substance, offering in short compass a readable overview of the notoriously difficult, competing approaches to the Book of Revelation. Nor does Desrosiers flinch from tackling the diverse issues generated by a text which has vexed two millennia of readers, focusing rightly on the book's core themes of hope and encouragement. The only real shortcoming is that the book is now dated, and its need of updating prevents five stars.
