A good book, but could be better . . .

This is our first year homeschooling (5th and 7th grade). Basically my sons are doing well using Saxon for math, and since we are on a tight budget, I went with this older version of Saxon 87 for my 7th grader.
One drawback, though. Each lesson opens with a Problem Solving word problem. My son had no idea how to solve the following problem in Lesson 28: "When Bill, Phil, Jill, and Gil entered the room they found four chairs waiting for them, so they each took a seat. One minute later they traded seats. Then they traded seats again and again. If they don't move the chairs but only move themselves, how many seating arrangements are possible?"
Long story short: none of the Saxon books had any explanation of how to do this sort of problem solving. I had the answer from the Solutions Manual (4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24) but no explanation as to why this is the way to solve the problem. I finally discovered in Algebra to Go (an Algebra math terms reference book) that this is a Statistics/Data Analysis problem called a permutation. None of the Saxon books we own (54, 65, 76, 87) mention the word 'permutation' much less explain how to solve a permutation problem.
My younger son encountered a similar problem in Saxon 54: the student was asked to compute a percentage without Saxon first providing instruction on how to do this, and I finally had to xerox the steps for computing percent out of a GED workbook in order to help him complete his Saxon 54 assignment. We love Saxon math overall, but I'm just saying . . . Saxon is not flawless.

My kids love Saxon!

I have two children that are school age right now and they were both in public school until recently. My youngest daughter wasn't doing very well in math. She was having a hard time grasping the concepts of even the simplest things. I of course didn't have time to really teach her after her spending all day at school and only a few hours at home awake. I made the decision to homeschool and I decided to go with Saxon for math. Both of my daughters really like the saxon books. They have both told me that they now understand things that they were having trouble with before in public school (even my oldest who was on the honor roll every year). My oldest is still make good grades and she now understands the math even better. My youngest was failing in public school but now she is making A's (often 100's) on her math assignments and she enjoys it now where she dreaded it before. These books are great and I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Great price, great material

The book has some writing in it but not where it is unuseable. Very good quality construction. The method Saxon uses is amazing. My daughter used to get really stressed out with math but Saxon is really working out. I have her do every practice and problem because our goal is to master each level not to hurry up. I do wish I had gotten a homeschool set so I would have the answer key and manipulatives it talks about. Not a deal breaker though.
