That insight opens up the possibility of reading Acts alongside other ancient literary genres: the lives of the Greek philosophers, the Greek novels of Chariton and Xenophon of Ephesus, Roman itineraries, Greek and Jewish apologetic, and Latin epic. The process, like the narrative of Acts itself, becomes a rich and evocative voyage of exploration, shedding light both on the varied social worlds of the author and his first readers, and on the complex communication problems underlying the creation of early Christian discourse. About the Author
Loveday Alexander is a Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield and a Canon-Theologian of Chester Cathedral. Since training as a classicist at Somerville College, Oxford, she has been exploring the interface between the classical world and the world of the New Testament.

Solid Scholarship

The book is basically a collection of essays by the author. The common theme of the essays is trying to determine the place of Acts in its Hellenistic literary context. The author's doctoral research involved the prefaces to Luke/Acts. The author tried to determine the genre of Acts based on clues from the preface. Acts was also considered in light of Hellenistic technical writings, which I do not have the space to elaborate about. Other genres such as epic, fiction, history and apologetic writings were considered for Acts. The book finished with a final essay considering the findings of Albert Wifstrand. This in my opinion was the most enlightening article. The author discussed Wifstrand's findings about the literary level of Acts and the influence of the Septuagint.
