Murray Rae has the gift of making the complex seem simple and the obscure seem clear. His survey of Kierkegaard's writings about the Christian faith is like drinking fresh spring water or, to change the metaphor, to look into the spring and see right to the bottom. He takes on Kierkegaard's recent biographers, Alister Hannay, who makes the incredible claim that Kierkegaard distanced himself from Christianity, and Joakim Garff,who cynically debunked Kierkegaard's claim to be a Christian writer. In contrast Rae argues that Kierkegaard was, above all, a Christian thinker. His writing is not a systematic theology but an aid to devotion, to 'upbuilding' and to discipleship. He wrote not for academic readers but for those "who are prepared to submit themselves to the tranforming discipline of divine grace." Scholars who are only interested in parsing philosophical and theological minutiae in order to impress their peers in academia and the secular world will find this book uncomfortable, as did the peers of Kierkegaard find his writings. Rae regards Kierkegaard "as one who is fundamentally orthodox in his theological convictions, as one who is committed to Christian faith as it has been handed down from the apostles, as one who upholds the authority of Scripture and as one who believes in the objective truth of a gospel that can be understood in truth only subjectively, only by those who live it, by those for whom it has become an existence communication." Unfortunately Kierkegaard studies appear to have been dominated by academic philosophers who focus on nineteenth century debates or postmodern studies which provide subjects for doctoral dissertations. Rae, and others, like C. Stephen Evans and Sylvia Walsh, have interpreted Kierkegaard for the layman, for the preacher, for the church. Rae's contribution is relevant to those of us who are striving to be faithful to the authentic Gospel, and who are looking for healthy and satisfying inspiration rather than pandering to the public and the popular. His final chapter is masterful in demonstrating Kierkgaard's relationship to Barth, Bonhoeffer and Tillich. He answers Barth's criticism of Kierkgaard that he "offered a joyless vision of the Christian faith, that his account of Christian discipleship was too individualistic, and that it produced a fixation upon subjectivity." I hope that this book becomes a text for a theological students, and finds its way into the studies of many preachers. Academic philosophers and professors of religious studies who are devotees of the historical-critical approach to the study of the New Testament and the life of Jesus would be advised to take note of it in order to see that the claims of revelation and the paradox of the Incarnation cannot be discounted.

He looks to Augustine as the Christian source for this image in his various references to humanity's turn to itself, though the threads of a relational account of sin are not drawn together with any systematic consequence until Martin Luther's description of 'homo incurvatus in se' in his commentary on Romans. Luther radicalizes Augustine's conception by applying this relational view of sin to the totus homo and by emphasizing its appearance, above all, in homo religiosus. The Western tradition of sin understood paradigmatically as pride has been recently called into question by feminist theologians. Daphne Hampson's critique of Luther on this front is considered and critiqued. Though she is right to call attention to the insufficiency of his and Augustine's myopic focus on pride, the question remains whether 'incurvatus in se' can operate paradigmatically as an umbrella concept covering a far wider range of sins. Karl Barth's extension of 'incurvatus in se' to apply more broadly to pride, sloth and falsehood suggests that incurvature can do just that.

Best on the subject matter if you want to understand this malady, Sin. Covers the subject matter methodically and relentlessly. Great in covering the knowledge of what the church understands as sin from Augustine forward. Not for the faint hearted - you will be gripped and caused to reflect upon your own heart as with a great light.

An excellent work!

In this publication of Jenson's St. Andrew's dissertation, he presents an engaging study exploring the nature of sin. He argues for a relational model of sin using the metaphor "Homo Incurvatus in Se" (a person curved in on oneself). Sin involves a person turning away from God and others and turning toward himself or herself. Jenson roots this metaphor in an investigation that traces the relational aspects of Augustine's theology, which are crystallized under Luther. Jenson takes into account Hampson's feminist critique of Augustine and Luther (who both conceive sin as pride or self-aggrandizement), and he expands the metaphor to include sins of self-abnegation using the work of Barth. Jenson's prose is very lucid and engaging, and as a scholarly work, is geared toward pastors, teachers, and university students.

It has long been noted that the book of Lamentations shares, at least in part, a theological outlook with the prophetic literature that the destruction of Jerusalem was the result of Yahweh's decisive action against the sins of the nation. Too often, however, this relationship has simply been presupposed, or assumed to be a relationship of shared perspective. To date, there has been no systematic exploration of how it is that Lamentations accepts and/or modifies the theological outlook of the prophetic literature. In addition, when the theology of the prophets has been discussed in relation to Lamentations, there has been a tendency to group all the prophetic books together as if they existed as a homogeneous whole, and shared amongst themselves a singular outlook. This tendency to simplify the theological complexity of the prophetic literature coincides with a similar tendency to reduce the theology of Lamentations to simple, monotheistic assertions. Drawing on the literary insights of Mikhail Bakhtin, this study aims to explore in detail the nature of the relationship between Lamentations and the pre-exilic/exilic prophetic literature. Drawing on the notions of dialogism, polyphony and double-voicing, the study argues that Lamentations enters into a dialogic relationship with prophetic literature, a relationship that both affirms and subverts that literature. Central to the acknowledgement of the dialogic interaction between Lamentations and the prophetic literature is the recognition of Lamentations as a multivalent, polyphonic text in which unmerged viewpoints exist in a tension-filled relationship.
