The Politics Beneath the Text

Römer provides a sophisticated yet readable outline of the story of the Deuteronomistic History and the political tensions beneath its creation. In brief, the author makes the argument that the books of the Hebrew Bible that make up the "so-called Deuteronomistic History" (Judges, Chronicles, and Kings) were created in three separate stages, before, during, and after the exile to Babylon. Römer does an especially good job of comparing the various strands of the text to Ancient Near Eastern texts, suggesting a political movement that wanted to centralize religion and politics in the city of Jerusalem and created a history to justify that concentration. This history traces the movement of a people from scattered outsiders to a minor nation that looked longingly outward to become a militarized superpower - and the tension of desire and oppression that caused them repetitive waves of grief. As a theologian, this book from the discipline of biblical studies was far more informative and readable than many of its kind. Suitable for general graduate students in divinity, theology, and biblical studies, as well as professionals from across the fields of religious education.

A New Way of Looking at the Bible

This book gave me a new insight into who the Bible was formed. Now I wonder who was inspired. Was it only the original writer, or was the scribe who added his own material also inspired?

This book which is very detailed also freed me from believing every word as factual, rather than a way of describing theological truths.

About the Author
Dr Edward Truch is Director of the KM Research Institute at Henley Management College and Chairman of Knowledge Partners. He is a visiting professor at the Warsaw Academy of Management and was formerly Head of Practice at ICL Consultancy (Fujitsu Group). As a specialist in business strategy, global organisation and knowledge management, he advises the boards of multinational companies and UK government departments on the Information Society and knowledge management issues. His international experience includes acting as a personal advisor to ministers in Central and Eastern Europe on industrial policy and public administration reform. Edward holds a doctorate from Brunel University and Henley Management College, an MSc in Nuclear Reactor Engineering from Imperial College, London and an MA in Physics from Oxford University.

In this book Warren Carter presents a thorough and detailed study of those passages in John's Gospel that resonate with titles and concepts familiar in the Roman society of the day. He argues that these concepts were so common that a writer such as John could not ignore them or fail to respond to them when writing his Gospel.
Carter's characteristic term is "negotiation" to describe the relationship between the Ephesian Christians and their Roman overlords. Roman domination is a fact of life in Ephesus, and the Christians there have to negotiate a modus vivendi, a way of living under that domination without compromising their faith.
Unlike other studies (such as that of Thatcher) Carter's actually concludes that some Christians had been so successful in that negotiation that they were over-assimilated to their environment, so that John has to employ a "rhetoric of distance" to call them back from their over-comfortable position.
It is tempting to suggest that the Johannine Christians were "comfortable" in their relationship with the dominant Roman authorities because many of the issues that Carter alludes to were not in fact issues for them at all. Although the writer of the Fourth Gospel and his readers were undoubtedly well aware of contemporary political realities in the Roman world in which they lived, evidence is lacking that they felt oppressed or persecuted within that world at the time the Fourth Gospel was written and first read. Later, yes - at that time, no. The present reviewer feels that Carter, like many who follow the "political tract" interpretation of the New Testament seriously overstate the case and go beyond the available evidence when arguing that the New Testament writers felt the need to respond to serious ideological and political threats from the Roman authorities.

Steven Shakespeare is Lecturer in Philosophy at Liverpool Hope University. He is the author of Kierkegaard, Language and the Reality of God (Ashgate, 2001) and Radical Orthodoxy. A Critical Introduction (SPCK 2007). He is also coauthor, with Hugh Rayment-Pickard, of The Inclusive God. Reclaiming Theology for an Inclusive Church (Canterbury, 2006).

About the Author
Baruch J. Schwartz is the A. M. Shlansky senior lecturer in Biblical History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research centers on Biblical religion and law, the Torah, classical prophetic literature and medieval biblical exegesis. He is the author of The Holiness Legislation (Jerusalem: Magnes Press, 1999) and of the commentary on Leviticus in The Jewish Study Bible (New York: Oxford University Press, 2004). He was an editor of the volume Texts, Temples and Traditions: A Tribute to Menahem Haran (Winona Lake, Ind.: Eisenbrauns, 1996).

Naphtali S. Meshel, M.A., teaches at the Department of Bible and at the "Amirim" Program for Outstanding Students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is currently working on his doctoral dissertation titled "Ritual as Language" at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Jeffrey Stackert is Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He is the author of Rewriting the Torah: Literary Revision in Deuteronomy and the Holiness Legislation (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2007).
