John Gould's music provides a perfect backdrop to Pooh's poetic creations and works as a natural chapter break. Good sound effects allow listeners to imagine themselves treading forest paths with the likes of Piglet and Eeyore. The cassettes are well marked, and the cover art features nicely colored versions of Ernest H. Shephard's original illustrations. The only drawback to the packaging is the clear plastic container which is likely to need replacing. This recording will be useful for introducing primary grade listeners to Pooh, but will also appeal to older children and adults.

Milne wrote the episodic stories of Winnie-the-Pooh and its sequel, The House at Pooh Corner (1928), for his young son Christopher Robin, whose toy animals were the basis for the characters and whose name was used for the young boy who appears in the tales as the benign master of the animals. a JOY to hold as well as READ

Before I bought this book I had read a few comments complaining about the color of the pages... somewhat yellowish in an almost but not quite parchmenty sort of way. Oh bother, said I, This is coloring my experience of the book. It's been in the back of my mind through every chapter, "Do I like this? Or do I not?" First let me say I love the brushed watercolors over the illustrations... I'm enthralled by the book jacket and the way the window is lit up by the colored version beneath on the actual cover... and the truth is I would have picked a slightly different page color -- but that's besides the point. It's still a lovely edition and my first grader certainly has no complaints.

On top of that, I'd forgotten how wonderful Pooh is. I'm so jaded by the Disney versions that invade every store and home (except mine) that I've spent a lot of time bypassing poor Pooh & Co altogether. We had recently revamped reading aloud here at home because books "written for first graders" were too mindless, books written at the reading level of Pooh today are written for an intellectual level of thought and humor that is beyond the first grader (A. A. Milne had an incredible gift for including all levels of maturity in these works) so our attempts there got tossed aside as my first grader played with his toes, fingers, hair and anything else he could reach because the books just weren't "keeping him." So I tallied up a new library budget and between Amazon and Abe Books did an overhaul... Pooh certainly is one that has hit the spot. The writing is more like how I would speak to my son, but the story is still appealing to the imagination of a first grader, the plot easily managed... so we've started each sit down with a couple of Milne poems and then followed it up with a chapter or two from this and The House At Pooh Corner Deluxe Edition thank the heavens for older books still in print! Do yourSELF the same favor, and while you're at it, toss out any of those Disney Pooh books... this will do so much more for your child's development.

Somewhat Disappointing

First of all, as pretty as the die-cut dust jacket is, it's prone to tearing. And if you have young children this is likely to be an issue, which sort of spoils the whole collector's/heirloom edition thing. Second, although I would ordinarily like the cream colored pages and colored illustrations, I don't like how they did it for this edition. Starting in the early '90s Dutton published full-color editions of all four of Milne's books (Winnie-the-Pooh, The House At Pooh Corner, When We Were Very Young, and Now We Are Six) on white paper, and the illustrations blended perfectly with the pages. Unfortunately, for this 80th anniversary edition the publisher seems to have simply reused the color pictures from the 1991 edition, complete with the white backgrounds for each illustration. The effect of this against the cream colored pages of this new book looks a bit sloppy to me, as if someone had cut out the pictures from the 1991 edition and pasted them onto the pages of this new one. The older color editions of Milne's books are still available through Amazon (search for "Winnie-the-Pooh full-color gift edition"), and in my opinion they're nicer than this new edition.

What richness, what grandeur is so easily captured? :)

This classic is listed under the age group of four to eight, and as a Poohphile I am quite appalled that it is. Winnie the Pooh books have such wit, wisdom, and humor that gets better every time I read them. Their not just for children, they are for everyone. Over the years, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo have become some of my dearest chums. I once heard someone say, or perhaps I read it, that "books are like dear friends, and who has too many friends?" I am quite inclined to agree with that statement. This book is a dear friend of mine and I hope that you shall make it yours. :)

How do the Gospel and Letters relate to the synoptics, or the Old Testament? Do we have a Gospel composed of multiple sources or is it a seamless document. How was this influential document written and where do the ideas found in the Gospel come from?

Since the aim of this book is to form a solid and comprehensive basis for future study of the Johannine literature, readers are placed firmly within the scholarly currents and streams of the Johannine literature. About the Author
Jan van der Watt is Professor and head of the Department of New Testament Studies at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His involvement with Johannine literature stretches over many years and includes publications like "Family of the King. Dynamics of metaphor in the Gospel according to John". He was also co-chair of the Johannine seminar of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas from 1997 to 2003. Currently he is area editor for Johannine literature and General Epistles for the 30 volume de Gruyter Encyclopedia of the Bible and its Reception, and is general editor of the Review of Biblical Literature. He is the author of over 80 academic articles, 25 chapters in books and 24 books.

One of the few

I had the great opportunity of listening to the author's lectures a few years ago and I knew he is a great speaker. But knowing it made me think that as is often the case he might not be necessarily a good writer... I was wrong... This is one of those rare books where anybody can obtain a lot of useful information, including a novice in Biblical studies or a graduate student... and don't let it fool you with the amount of pages. The way it is written saves a lot of space for your own reading without affecting its contents.

Practical application overview

If I were to choose one book that PM's had to read to understand the issues in the practical application of risk management processes, this would be that book. It will not help a project risk manager learn to use the tools and methods for risk management. Instead it focuses on the strategic level thinking needed to implement risk management on the project, program, and portfolio levels.
Again, this is not the book to read if you are looking for information on identifying risks or working them through a mitigation plan. If you have just become the project or risk manager on a large, complex effort this book gives a good look ahead at the factors that will determine if your risk process will be successful or not.

About two thirds of the book may be shortened just to two words: blah-blah
That leaves us with one third. Which is OK. Except the fact there are little keys how to use it in practice.
And most of ideas are widely known and far away from being a revelation.
And the price is inadequate.

If we can't watch it, this will be just fine!

The BBC, in the days before home video, decided that some of its programs were no longer required in its archives. In a somewhat unsystematic purging, many classics were consigned to the flames, including several Doctor Who stories. Fortunately, some fans of the series had made their own audio recordings, and these (following a thorough re-mastering by the BBC) are being released.
'The Web of Fear' is one of these releases. This story is very important in Doctor Who's long history - it points the way forward to a major change in format. At the beginning of the series, the Doctor's companions included two teachers (Ian and Barbara). No story took place on contemporary Earth as one of the plot threads was the endeavours of these two teachers to return to their own time and place. Even after they returned home, this aversion to contemporary Earth continued. The first story fully set on contemporary Earth was 'The War Machines', and 'The Web of Fear' was the second.
Following on from the popularity of the Yeti in 'The Abominable Snowmen' (another lost story, and sadly not also available as a CD soundtrack), the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria again encounter the Yeti - this time in the contemporary London Underground. This story introduces Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, who afterwards is promoted to Brigadier and placed in charge of the British section of the United Nations Taskforce. One of the most popular of Doctor Who's supporting cast.
The story is strong, with an underlying mystery - who is the agent of the Great Intelligence who is controlling things? There is a sizable cast with lots of suspects. As the story progresses, the web closes in and the cast members are thinned out. Tension would have been quite high for the viewers experiencing this story, one episode at a time over six weeks. It is still palpable in this story, even if you were to listen to all two and a half hours in one sitting.
Of course, we are deprived of the visuals and linking narrative read by Frazer Hines (who plays Jamie in the story) can only go some way towards bridging these gaps. For me, the season in which 'The Web of Fear' appeared is the first I can remember watching Doctor Who as a child. My memory could supply a limited amount of imagery to accompany the sounds, but I don't believe this is necessary.
'The Web of Fear' is one of the best stories of Patrick Troughton's era playing the Doctor, and it is a good story for anyone interested in the show. For the fans, the bonus is that the story is a precursor to the UNIT stories, which were to form the backbone of the series a couple of years after this story was broadcast.
Highly recommended. OK BBC, where's 'The Abominable Snowmen'?

Why No DVD Release?

After enjoying the first two episodes on iTunes, i've decided to muster up some money for the DVD release of this classic story. Now, I know this does not relate to the audio story at all, but where is the DVD release on Amazon? They don't NEED the cover do they? I just want to pre-order it. Hurry up iTunes, please! This is a wonderful story I will definately have on my DVD shelf. Guys..?
