About the Author

Denis Minns is a Dominican monk and lives in New South Wales, Australia. He was a member of the Theology Faculty of Oxford University and lecturer for Blackfriars in Patristics. He is the author of Irenaeus and Traditional doctrine and the antique world view... in The Task of Theology Today. His interests include Patristics, Early Church History and the History of Doctrine. He is currently editing and translating Justin Martyr.

Breathes the ancient vigor of the Gospel

When Erasmus published his first edition of Irenaeus' Against Heresies, Denis Minns tells us, he referred to its author as "my Irenaeus." He was proud to claim ownership, Minns states, "because it revealed a picture of the life and thought of the early Church that was markedly and refreshingly different from the life and thought of the Church of his own times. It breathed, he said, the ancient vigor of the Gospel." In my estimation, Minns has achieved a similar outcome in this highly readable and informed introduction to Irenaeus. Recommended.

A great book about one of the least known church fathers. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to study the church fathers, or just to go deeper into their faith.

Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics is one of the major theological works of the 20th century. The Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth (1886-1968) was the most original and significant Reformed theologian of the twentieth century. Barth began the Church Dogmatics in 1932 and continued working on its thirteen volumes until the end of his life. Barth's writings continue to guide and instruct the preaching and teaching of pastors and academics worldwide.

The English translation was prepared by a team of scholars and edited by G. W. Bromiley and T. F. Torrance and published from 1936. A team of scholars at Princeton Theological Seminary have now provided the translation of Greek, Latin, Hebrew and French passages into English. The original is presented alongside the English translation. This makes the work more reader friendly and accessible to the growing number of students who do not have a working knowledge of the ancient languages. This new edition with translations is now available for the first time in individual volumes.

Barth's theology found its expression mainly through his closely reasoned fourteen part magnum opus, Die Kirchliche Dogmatik. Having taken over 30 years to write, the Church Dogmatics is regarded as one of the most important theological works of all time, and represents the pinnacle of Barth's achievements as a theologian.

Landmark Achievement

Karl Barth is arguably the most important theologian in the past centuries. Church Dogmatics, his magnum opus, is the core of Barth's life work. The past decade has witnessed tremendous growth in Barthian studies. Although Church Dogmatics has been available in English for years, there are long untranslated quotations in Latin, Greek and German that are essential for understanding Barth's thought.
The new Study Edition of Church Dogmatics contains English translations of these passages for those of us who are not fluent in the original languages. The original page numbering is preserved for ease and consistency of reference.
This 33 volume project will open Barth's magisterial thinking to new generations of scholars. It is a landmark achievement.
