About the Author
One of Canada's most prolific researchers, Professor Ronald J. Burke's work has focused on the relationship between the work environment and individual and organizational health. He was Founding Editor of the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences and has served on editorial boards of more than a dozen journals. He has served as Director of the PhD Program at Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, and as Associate Dean for Research. Professor Burke is Professor Emeritus of Organizational Behavior at Schulich. He has published over 500 journal articles and edited or co-edited 31 books. Dr Sharon Clarke is Reader in Organizational Psychology at Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. She has research interests in safety culture, safety climate, leadership, and workplace accidents. Her work has been published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and other leading journals. She is Associate Editor for the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology. Recent research grants have focused on the impact of safety interventions on safety climate; this work was awarded first place in 'Best Practice in Interventions Competition' 2008 by NIOSH. Cary L. Cooper, CBE, is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health, Lancaster University Management School, England. He is a prolific author and is a frequent contributor to the national media. He is Founding Editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Editor in Chief of the medical journal Stress & Health. He is past President of the British Academy of Management, a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of the (American) Academy of Management. Professor Cooper is also the President of the Institute of Welfare Officers, President of ISMA, President of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, President of RELATE and Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences. In 2001, Cary was awarded a CBE by the Queen for his contribution to organizational health.

Gordon Harris FCMI, Professional Manager '[Action learning for Managers] is a really good guide...it's not a lot of work to go through and it comes at a reasonable price for these days. Pedler offers clear, simple text, with plenty of stories, pictures, bullet lists and examples-and resources (such as questionnaires and checklists) which readers will not need much incentive to try out. Too many books on action learning seem to be heavy, in all senses, and that appears to be because they are linked to specific contexts (such as big business, manufacturing, and even, yes, education). Pedler's book is indeed context-free and that seems to have made it much more accessible and fun and therefore much more likely to succeed.' About the Author
Mike Pedler is Professor of Action Learning at Henley Management College and a partner in the consultancy, Action Learning for Service Improvement (ALSI). He works with commercial, voluntary and public sector client organisations and is known for his work on action learning, the learning organisation and leadership development. Mike has written and co-authored a number of books and articles, and is Editor of Action Learning: Research & Practice - the first international journal for action learning from Informa.

Excellent variation on action learning

Mike Pedler of the UK has written a practical, readable and informative book on action learning. His approach is based on Revans work rather than Marquardt, whose approach may be more familiar to US practitioners. Pedler's examples closely resemble supervisor circles or manager self-help groups--with members meeting regularly to help each other solve a variety of problems. This is in contrast to action learning teams that are pulled together to address a specific business problem over several months time. This is not a criticism of Pedler; rather, I found his approach to reflection simple and helpful, and his illustrations, worksheets and bibliography instructive.

Liverpool Doctorate of Business

The research by Pedler and Revans lays the foundation on which the University of Liverpool doctorate in business programme is built. This is a nice short work that makes a good introduction to the material. It is required reading for first year doctoral students but would be a nice benefit to any manager who would like an intro to action research.

Dissappointing

I had higher expectations of this book. I found it rather parochial. The dialog and cases feel forced and contrived. It didn't get 1 star because it does have some useful insight but it's like watching a boring 2 hour movie for a 2 minute thriller ending.
