Too many books on action learning seem to be heavy, in all senses, and that appears to be because they are linked to specific contexts (such as big business, manufacturing, and even, yes, education). About the Author
Mike Pedler is Professor of Action Learning at Henley Management College and a partner in the consultancy, Action Learning for Service Improvement (ALSI). He works with commercial, voluntary and public sector client organisations and is known for his work on action learning, the learning organisation and leadership development. Mike has written and co-authored a number of books and articles, and is Editor of Action Learning: Research & Practice - the first international journal for action learning from Informa.

Excellent variation on action learning

Mike Pedler of the UK has written a practical, readable and informative book on action learning. His approach is based on Revans work rather than Marquardt, whose approach may be more familiar to US practitioners. Pedler's examples closely resemble supervisor circles or manager self-help groups--with members meeting regularly to help each other solve a variety of problems. This is in contrast to action learning teams that are pulled together to address a specific business problem over several months time. This is not a criticism of Pedler; rather, I found his approach to reflection simple and helpful, and his illustrations, worksheets and bibliography instructive.

Liverpool Doctorate of Business

The research by Pedler and Revans lays the foundation on which the University of Liverpool doctorate in business programme is built. This is a nice short work that makes a good introduction to the material. It is required reading for first year doctoral students but would be a nice benefit to any manager who would like an intro to action research.

Dissappointing

I had higher expectations of this book. I found it rather parochial. The dialog and cases feel forced and contrived. It didn't get 1 star because it does have some useful insight but it's like watching a boring 2 hour movie for a 2 minute thriller ending.
