About the Author
Tracy Bhamra is Reader in Sustainable Design in the Department of Design and Technology at Loughborough University. After initially having a background in manufacturing engineering she has been researching in the field of sustainable design since 1992. Vicky Lofthouse lectures in the Department of Design and Technology at Loughborough University. After training as an industrial designer at Loughborough she worked as a designer consultant for Johnson Haigh Rogers and then specialised in sustainable design at Cranfield University. The authors' research and consultancy work has influenced a broad spectrum of sectors including electronic and electrical, automotive, textiles and clothing, and packaging.

About the Author
Andrew Erridge is Professor of Public Policy and Management at the University of Ulster, where he runs courses in strategic procurement management and carries out research mainly on public procurement. His publications include books on purchasing competences and managing purchasing. He is a committee member and former chair of IPSERA. Ruth Fee is a Lecturer in Government in the School of Public Policy, Economics and Law at the University of Ulster. Her teaching and research interests are in public procurement law and policy, and European law and policy. John McIlroy has a Postgraduate Diploma in Purchasing and Supply Management from the University of Ulster. He has worked as a researcher in public procurement at the University of Ulster and has published articles on supply chain strategy, competitive tendering and electronic procurement. He is now working for an Internet company providing information and electronic commerce services to local government.

The fictional project requires the main character, David, to carry out the overwhelming task of dismantling, of all things, a zoo containing over 3000 animals of all types. What follows is an entertaining guide through the processes of planning, organizing, and carrying out the "project." The concepts put forth by the authors can be adapted to most projects of most magnitudes. The table of contents, which is a list of steps to follow, includes phrases/chapter titles such as "Proact, Not Act!" Much of what the authors present is common sense, and they have pulled it together in a charming and nonthreatening manner. After reading this book, one should certainly feel more confident about taking on projects, if not moving a zoo. For all types of libraries.

Innovative perspective toward project management lessons

Excellent book for PM, project participants and whoever is going to be participate directly or indirectly in life project. Present the project management culture and technique from a life sample of Zoo Dismantling project. It gave me an insights of project management in a very different angle ¡V (as I used to read a lot of project management books for both work practice and study purposes). I am really impressed at the creativity and knowledge of these two authors.
Highly recommend to all level of project managers.

Well written and easily readable book that offers practical project management tips in an effective format. As you follow the short chapters, different project management issues are covered practically and comprehensively. Although the book was written a while ago it is no less relevant. Arguably the most readable Project Management book and I have read Critical Chain !

The orginal textbook!

Most senior executives in Europe with the words "communication" in their titles have this book on their desks. It's crowded with practical and useful information. Although Bill, and his company Synopsis, speak and work in America quite a bit, many of the case studies are European. Arguably though, with people like Quirke working away at this relatively new discipline, Europe and the UK are ahead of the US and the Americas in strategic communication. This, and his other books, can also be ordered at synopsisonline dot com. Now that most of us have knocked every spare penny worth of waste out of our production cycle, getting employees to work smarter and better understand business strategy is a logical next step. Quirke's got it sorted.

Essential reading for all internal communicators

This is a new edition of a highly popular book that many communicators have been raving about for the many years. It has been thoroughly rewritten with four new chapters and 80 more pages. This is not really a "how to do it" book. It is more an in depth "how to understand it" book, so internal communicators can work out for themselves how to "turn strategy into action".

A strength of the book is the first section (of three chapters over 100 pages) linking communication to organizational strategy. It painstakingly explains how business operates (including globally) and what communicators need to do to contribute to business success. The themes are familiar and include: stakeholders, planning, leadership, trust, innovation, communication as a process, information v communication, changing attitudes and behavior, measurement; as well as business issues such as brand, strategy, structure (including matrices and the corporate centre), and culture.

Part 2 (four chapters over 150 pages) covers "leading change": leadership and engagement, making change happen (including the richness of media), face-to-face communication, and communicating projects and initiatives.

Part 3 (three chapters over 100 pages) is on "pulling it together": planning and managing communication, a wonderful chapter on "repositioning the role of the internal communication function" (which Quirke believes is vital if communicators are to add value), and measurement.

Quirke has a vast knowledge of both business and communication and the content is solid and reasonably easy to read. There are half a dozen long, informative case studies (e.g. BMW, Starbucks). The writing style is quirky (e.g. "information can travel over wires, but communication happens between the ears", "clutter kills", "cycle, not cascade", and both cascades and managers "leak meaning"). There are some excellent diagrams although I would have liked more.

This book is great but not perfect. There is the odd spelling error and missing reference (e.g. a great Jack Welch paragraph). I could find no discussion of social media except a brief mention of blogging, nor any mention of communication with remote workers. Some statistics quoted probably apply only to the UK (e.g. MORI norms) and a knowledge of UK companies (e.g. Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury, Tesco) will help but is not critical to understanding.

Certainly if you don't have the first edition you should get this one, and read it carefully. But should you buy it if you have the first edition? The answer is probably "yes", if only to get the brilliant new section on the "roles" of communicators. In this Quirke expands on his earlier descriptions of the communication roles of post office, travel agent and consultant, to a new set: distributor, craftsman, technical advisor, consultant, and coach. Strongly recommended.

Professor Gloria Barczak is Professor and Chair of the marketing department at Northeastern University and former director of the Executive MBA program. A lively, engaging, compelling story of Greek history.

The Greeks examines life in the ancient Hellenic world: an era when the foundations of modern science and politics were laid. Based on a three-hour PBS series airing February, this provides a lively story of Greek experience through the eyes and experiences of her heroes and heroines in an excellent, involving account which comes alive. Highly recommended as a strong alternative to the usual dry Greek history.

Informative read

This is an informative read if you are looking for an overview of some of the more salient achievements attributed to Classical Greece. The narrative is told through reference to the life and deeds of fifteen characters selected by the author and academic Paul Anthony Cartledge as being instrumental in the rise and fall of the Ancient Civilization.

It's the second time that I've ready this book. The first coincided with a televised documentary screened some time ago in the UK on which the book was based. It takes an accomplished historian to even attempt to dissect and unify such an expansive and crucial history such as that of Ancient Greece, but the author manages to achieve it with aplomb.

From Homer, author of The Iliad and The Odyssey, the first two recognised books of European literature, to the military expansionism of Alexander The Great, The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the early years of Western political theory and modern thought.

So great is the debt owed to the Ancient Greeks, that Shelley was claimed to have once pronounced We are all Greeks. It's an appropriate epitaph to a great Civilization.

Traditional scholarship assumes the dominance of a Zadokite priesthood from a united monarchy until the time of the Hasmoneans. The thesisof this study is that references to the "sons of Zadok" in ancient texts reflect the sectarian nature of the Second Temple period. The extent to which modern scholarship has magnified the Zadokites as the dominant priestly institution from the monarchy into the Second Temple period cannot besubstantiated. Rather, the Second Temple period serves as the terminus for all literary references to the Zadokites and provides a socio-historical context which allows for the development of a plausible reconstruction explaining their appearance in the ancient texts. This comprehensive study of the Zadokites provides a study of historiography that traces the growth of scholarly notions concerning the Zadokites. The study examines historiographic issues related to the development of these conceptualizations. Literary analysis indicates the role and status of the Zadokites in available textual evidence. A socio-historical reconstruction forms the theoretical basis and attempts to answer such questions such as: Who placed the Zadokites in these texts? Why were the Zadokites included in these texts? The Zadokites will be situated in relation to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The study provides a foundation for studies of priesthood(s) in ancient Israel.

About the Author
Charles Lockwood was a paleoanthropologist. He was an expert on early hominid taxonomy and evolutionary relationships. He lectured at University College London, and he'd previously worked in the Department of Anthropology at Arizona State University. Chris Stringer is the Natural History Museum's research leader in human origins. He has spent 40 years studying paleoanthropology, and is the author of Lone Survivors: How We Came to Be the Only Humans on Earth.

Good review, nice illustrations.

An easy-to-read summary of (almost) up-to-date knowledge of our history. I found the figures on p97, illustrating the distributions of species 500,000 and 50,000 years ago particularly interesting. It's a bit weak on modern DNA work, however.

In Praise of Our Ancient Cousins

The question where we, homo sapiens came from and how we are connected in evolutionary terms to other near human relatives has long fascinated us. For many years the Neanderthals had been considered something of a limited creature, especially in its intellect and lack of sophisticated culture. As the volume shows this is simply not true.

The volume is beautifully illustrated and instructive. The reader learns how scientific detective work using many disciplines together is giving these creatures their rightful place in natural history. Some readers may be surprised that many human races contain a fair percentage of Neanderthal genes, and are fortunate to do so. Thus our long lost cousins of the past continue to have much to teach us. This volume is an excellent and well illustrated survey of why this is true. The book is a joy to read. I learned much from doing so.

An excellent account

The rating of this book will perhaps depend on one’s background in human evolution. As an introductory book, I would rate it five stars, for a reader with some knowledge of the subject, I rate it four stars. In either case, it is up-to-date (having been updated in 2013), authoritative, well-written, and with very high quality illustrations.

Although not an expert, I have read numerous books and articles on the subject matter. Nonetheless I got a great deal of pleasure and many new insights from The Human Story. I thoroughly recommend it.

There is a little underlining and a few notes in Vol. I. In Vol. II there is only a small amout of underlining. Both books have a p/o name on the free page. These books are tight and solid and square with bright & clean pages. The gilt lettering on the spine is very sharp. 373 & 497 pages.

An unsurpassed standard

Charles 1920 commentary has not been surpassed in the depth of its text-critical analysis and the extent of its comparanda. It is, however, dated and Charles' prediliction for source theories, interpolations, clumsy editors, etc. holds little influence in today's world. It is nevertheless indispensible for serious scholarly study.
