Review
'The Psychology of Marketing is a must read for advanced students of marketing as well as marketing professionals. Adopting the notion that 'there is nothing as valuable as good theory' the book provides a very comprehensive incisive overview of theories of psychology and their relevance to marketing and personnel management. Its currency is well illustrated by its treatment of recent developments in biological psychology and their applicability to marketing.' - Ram Baliga, John B. The Project Risk Maturity Model: Measuring and Improving Risk Management Capability, by Martin Hopkinson

Top businesses recognise risk management as a core feature of their project management process and approach to the governance of projects. However, a mature risk management process is required in order to realise its benefits; one that takes into account the design and implementation of the process and the skills, experience and culture of the people who use it. To be mature in the way you manage risk you need an accepted framework to assess your risk management maturity, allowing you to benchmark against a recognised standard. A structured pathway for improvement is also needed, not just telling you where you are now, but describing the steps required to reach the next level. The Project Risk Maturity Model detailed here provides such an assessment framework and development pathway. It can be used to benchmark your project risk processes and support the introduction of effective in-house project risk management. Using this model, implementation and improvement of project risk management can be managed effectively to ensure that the expected benefits are achieved in a way that is appropriate to the needs of each organisation. Martin Hopkinson has developed The Project Risk Maturity Model into a robust framework, and this book allows you to access and apply his insights and experience. A key feature is a CD containing a working copy of the QinetiQ Project Risk Maturity Model (RMM). This will enable you to undertake maturity assessments for as many projects as you choose. The RMM has been proven over a period of 10 years, with at least 250 maturity assessments on projects and programmes with a total value exceeding £60 billion. A case study in the book demonstrates how it has been used to deliver significant and measurable benefits to the performance of major projects.

The Project Risk Maturity Model
By alfonso
Introduction to the Book

I strongly recommend reading carefully the introduction of this book. The author explains, very clearly, what is the purpose of the book that addresses an important need: "where an organization is in terms of Risk Management Maturity". The introduction gives the reader a couple of examples regarding the results an organization can obtain through the Risk Assessment Maturity Model.

Overview of Book's Structure

This book is organized, very clearly and in a simple and easy way to read, in two parts:

* Introduction to the Project Risk Maturity Model
* Guide to the Project Risk Maturity Model

It has five chapters in the Introduction part and six chapters in the second part of the book. It also uses a lot of tables and figures with examples that are very useful to understand the content of the book. This book can facilitate assessors and organizations to figure out where they are in terms of Risk Management process implementation.

The structure of the book is easy to follow, and add many real examples that helps the reader to understand the main points the book deal with.

Highlights: What I liked!

I liked the graphics that are very clear and understandable. Graphics are fundamental to understand what to do and how to do it regarding Risk Management Maturity.

I liked the examples and case studies, and also the recommendations provided by the author.

I liked the CD included, because readers will have a tool to use (tangible things and added value).

Shortfalls: What was Missing!

The book is great but a little bit serious. Probably some funny story, I'm sure the author knows, would be fantastic if were added. In any case the author did a great job.

Who might benefit from the Book

* Risk management Consultants
* Risk Management Assessors
* Senior Project managers
* PMO Managers
* Operational Managers
* Risk Management Researchers
* Any manager who consider Risk Management implementation is key for project success

Conclusion

This book is a must for project and business professionals who want to find out how to improve the risk management culture in an organization, and determine what actions should be taken for that purpose.

Project professionals can benefit from that book analyzing his risk management maturity level going through the assessment questions, and generating his/her own action plan to improve.

A good book
By Matthew Leitch
I got hold of this book to have a look at the material on the risk maturity model, but what I gained from it was something different.

For me the maturity model assessment questions and summaries are not as useful as the author's discussion of good and bad practices, and how they should be scored. There's an excellent example of multi-pass project modelling/analysis in chapter 3 and I cheered inwardly as he explained how common but flawed practices should be scored.

Many assessment frameworks are let down by rather vague questions that require rather subjective answers. The guidance in this book goes a long way to solving that problem for the assessment framework presented.

'Don't mistake business savvy for drudgery. It makes you a better designer. The more you know about business, the better you'll be at seeing the world from your clients' point of view, working out what they need and spotting opportunities for them - this book is good news. Whether you're starting out or an experienced veteran, the wisdom in these pages will help to make being in business a positive experience.' --David Kester, Chief Executive, Design Council

'...a useful text for anyone starting or running a business, as the more we as designers understand and value the business world, the more impact we can make with our ideas. This book has some very impressive contributors and is an interesting read and also a useful book to have on your shelf for ongoing reference.' --Deborah Szebeko, thinkpublic

'As co-proprietor of a design agency and former President of the Pan-European Brand Design Association (PDA) I have over the past 35 years been following the rise and fall of small and large design companies. Maintaining an equilibrium between customers, team work and design quality is indeed a delicate balancing act at which many fail and few master brilliantly. Clearly, a book that explains how these elements are connected was long overdue; Shan Preddy has now written it. Please read it. It belongs on every designer's bedside table.' --Jean Jacques Schaffner, Schaffner & Conzelmann, Basel, Switzerland

Christianity in Ancient Rome: The First Three Centuries, by Bernard Green

The reader is taken from the very first generation of Christians in Rome, a tiny group of Jews who acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, down to the point when Christianity had triumphed over savage persecution and was on the verge of becoming the religion of the Roman Empire.

Rome was by far the biggest city in the Roman world and this had a profound effect on the way Christianity developed there. It became separate from Judaism at a very early date. The Roman Christians were the first to suffer savage persecution at the hands of Nero. Rome saw the greatest theological movements of the second century thrashing out the core doctrines of the Christian faith.

The emergence of the papacy and the building of the catacombs gave the Roman Church extraordinary influence and prestige in the third century, another time of cruel persecution. And it was in Rome that Constantine's patronage of the Christian faith was most evident as he built great basilicas and elevated the personal status of the Pope.

Review
'This admirably clear and forthright account presents the development of Christianity in Rome as a series of interactions with the city's political, social and cultural environment. Green is a wise and urbane guide through fiendishly difficult territory; his commentary upon emperors, popes, and the succession of turbulent priests and disputatious theologians who helped give Christian Rome its distinctive cast is at once thoughtfully balanced and wryly opinionated.' — Neil McLynn, Faculty of Classics, Oxford University, Oxford, UK (Neil McLynn)

'The history of Christianity in Rome before Constantine is notoriously obscure. Bernard Green threads a learned, careful and surefooted path through a long series of scholarly minefields. He presents the evidence in an exemplary fashion and he sets out the problems of interpreting it sensibly and with good judgement: I only wish that such a sensible guide to a difficult subject had been available for me to use as a textbook while I was still teaching undergraduates!' - Timothy D. Barnes, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto, Honorary Fellow, School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh. (Timothy D. Barnes)

'In this scholarly and readable account, Bernard Green provides an excellent analysis of early Christianity in its capital city in the West. Literary and visual sources are presented alongside modern scholarship in five chapters succinctly entitled "Origins", "Community", "Persecution", "Catacombs" and "Constantine". Christians in their inner lives are probed alongside the political and social frameworks within which they lived. As a result, readers can appreciate better the fascinating story of how divine assistance and human endeavour blended together during an epoch that proved formative for the Christian church and, thereby, for world history.' — Norman Tanner, SJ, Pontificia Universita Gregoriana, Rome, Italy (Norman Tanner SJ)

Great book on History of Christians in Rome

This is the one of the best books I've read on early Christianity in the city of Rome. Very scholarly and Very readable. Another book on this subject is Peter Lampe's From Paul to Valentinus: Christians at Rome in the First Two Centuries; which is a little more technical.

Increasingly, top executives view supply markets as sources of competitive advantage and as means of achieving strategic objectives. Procurement is the management activity that makes this happen, and this process depends on a superior risk management capability if it is be effective. Yet, despite its importance, Procurement Risk Management is surprisingly under-developed. Recent Global Risk surveys have pinpointed Supply Chain Vulnerability as one of the four key global risks for the next decade. What is less well known is that this is only half of the story ... risk exposures also exist inside the company and can be just as damaging. No company is an island; it needs suppliers as well as customers. Conventional wisdom puts great emphasis on managing certain aspects of business such as customers; operations; strategy and finances. Typically, however, much less regard is paid to external suppliers and the risks present in dealing with them. As a minimum, suppliers are the sources of materials, services and expert attention which enable the company to feed its business model. When done well, a risk-aware procurement process provides the bonus of competitive advantage, with the ability to capitalise, on the occurrence of unexpected events. This short guide explains just how to do it. Each chapter explores the topic in hand, outlines the risks and the remedies available and offers guidance on the principles and risk prevention.

Procurement is more than just purchasing
By Jan Husdal
"Do yo like living dangerously? Then you should read this book. It exposes you to over seventy types of risk you you can take in your business life." Those are the opening words of this brialliant book, which makes a strong argument for procurement risk management being just a short step away from business continuity management. Not only will this book help procurement professionals to lift their head from their desks and gain a wider perspective on possible ramifications of their purchasing decisions, it will also help top managers to seeing procurement as a crucial contributor to a company's well-being and competitive advantage.

The book's structure and individual chapters are built around a "risk catcher" figure, a pentagon where each corner represents the five different risk landscapes where business risk are lurking:

* External dependencies
* Market Conditions and Behavior
* Procurement Process
* Management Control
* Handling the Unexpected

Using the risk catcher figure, it is possible to identify which risk landscape that needs particular attention, and each chapter provides examples of potential risks and what the remedies look like.

Being `At Risk' = Impact × Probability × No Mitigation
where Impact = Exposure × Event

Effective Procurement Risk Management does include accepting some risks, with these situations being monitored to avoid being caught out if things change. Other situations can be left `at risk' but contingency plans are ready should risks materialise. And where real trouble lurks, urgent action is required followed by regular audit.

This book calls itself 'a short guide'. It is not. It may be small on the outside but it is big on the inside. It is packed with useful information, for the procurement professional, for the supply chain manager, for the CEO, for any business owner. Even for the supply chain risk researcher, who is likely to find he exhaustive list of risks particularly useful. Truly, this book is about so much more than procurement, it is about so much more than the supply-side risks in the supply chain, it is about any kind of business and how to do your business well.

Nietzsche and Theology (Philosophy and Theology), by Craig Hovey

Over a century ago, Nietzsche famously declared the death of God, but this has hardly kept Christian theologians from making positive use of this "master of suspicion."
Nietzsche and Theology displays how his most generative and provocative ideas are also deeply theological and continue to teach Christians how to be Christians in the world in which they find themselves. Hovey highlights the constructive contributions that can emerge from receptively meeting Nietzsche as modernity's philosophical other. Unchained from resenting Nietzsche's "philosophical hammer," such encounters will surely reward those who journey into the far country of Nietzsche's Christianity.

The book examines Nietzsche's critiques of epistemology, culture, history, morality, and metaphysics for their importance not only in philosophical theology, but also in biblical and historical studies, theological ethics, and systematic theology. Hovey argues that Nietzsche's reception in theology continues to be of critical importance and explores new, constructive avenues for the use of Nietzsche in theology. If the death of God is not primarily a metaphysical assertion but a cultural diagnosis, modern secularization surely attests to Nietzsche's prescience, a quality that yields extraordinary promise when allowed to be heard.

Can Nietzsche be useful to Christian theology?
By Helen Hancox
This was a very interesting book! It's not an introduction to Nietzsche's thought (it presupposes a certain amount of knowledge of his writings), nor a refutation of his anti-Christian writings. Instead it seeks to see whether any of Nietzsche's philosophy can be applied fruitfully to Christian life - and the author believes it can. He reminds us that "Christians have learned nothing about God (their thologians, no doubt, having let them down) if they have not learned to look for God in unexpected places." He sees our reading of Nietzsche as "welcoming a stranger" and as an encouragement to "subject the truth to the reality of your whole life."

The author's writing style is excellent with a warm and friendly feel as he discusses some very complex ideas. At 150 pages it's not particularly long and it is by no means exhaustive about Nietzsche's thought, instead dipping in to particular areas through which Hovey thinks we can illuminate some aspects of theology. The content is quite difficult to understand at times and probably should not be read at one sitting to get the full benefit but it is a worthwhile read for those interested in philosophy and theology.
