Despite all the hype about e-learning, the real breakthrough in technology, at least as far as HR goes, is in the development of the corporate intranet for people management purposes. Bryan Hopkins' and James Markham's book explains the potential for intranets in every aspect of HR: personnel administration, performance management, employee development, communication and knowledge management, as well as training and e-learning. The book asks and answers the key questions you need to ask yourself and provides case studies illustrating how organizations have successfully exploited their intranet to help their people work more effectively and efficiently. HR managers are under pressure to cut costs, increase the effectiveness and range of the services they deliver. In many organizations there is also considerable pressure to maximize the returns on investment in technology. This book provides you with the means to achieve all of these goals.

e-HR surely not so simplistic
By Nicola Perucconi
As many books about HR this too is concentrating about the operative aspects of the HR process work out.e-HR is dealt from the very operative side,by this way the author leaves the reader the hard task of discovering and reorganizing the few strategical insights provided across the book.I would define it a poor value summary of many othere books, just trying to cover all the critical aspects of the argument but really not having an its own point of view.I shold have expected something really better from a book that has been realesed after an historycal period in which e-HR experiences have been tested in many organizations. In my opinion previously realeased books such as "Web-based Human resources" ,"A thousand tribes","Corporate portals" deal with the problem of the organizational process web-enabling in a more complex and meaningful way.
My suggestion is to enjoy other sources about the argument, first of all the IT systems vendors' sites whose material is really good value.

Pass on this one. Trust me.
By SERIOUS12
A huge disappointment. If this CD is out of print, it's for a very good reason. It's terrible. Firstly, it's severely edited and poorly done at that. The character of Biondello is almost completely omitted altogether. Secondly, the actors speak their dialogue with as much verve and flair as if they were socializing at an insurance seminar. All the rich and bawdy humor of Shakespeare's funniest play has been completely stripped from this production. The prices that sellers are asking for this CD are not worth it. Not by a long shot. If this is out of print, I say let it stay that way. There are better audio recordings of this play out there.

This audiobook version is far superior: Taming of the Shrew It's completely unabridged and the actors know what they're doing. Happy hunting.

Review
' ... very clearly written ... with a user-friendly approach for the deliverer of training courses a very readable, first level account of much of the training field. The various approaches and techniques are covered in simple, brief approaches, the principal concentration, in this case I believe rightly so, on the bases of training - training needs, learning and trainer qualities.' Training Officer 'The author's style of writing is practical and friendly, and the book will be of interest to professional trainers, managers and team leaders concerned with staff development.' European Foundation for Management Development '... this is a useful guide for new trainers and managers wishing to run their own staff training programmes.' Aslib Book Guide '... written with an authoritative voice by an author whose own record as a practitioner adds value and relevance. It is difficult to indicate in a short review just how much the author has packed into a relatively short space - it is an impressive achievement and offers a unique blend of distilled experience and theory' Journal of Documentation 'it is a good guide for people new to running a training event.' Journal of the Association of Staff Development, January 2000 'This training guide is a delight to read. ... The author clearly is very knowledgeable in the area of learning and cognition. His expertise and advice regarding learning styles are extremely helpful ... This volume is a worthwhile and valuable addition to any trainer's library. It will be a reference tool that will be consulted over and over again. If you train, you must own this title.' Electronic Library, Volume 18, Number 3, 2000

Transformation Theology: Church in the World, by Oliver Davies, Paul D. Janz, Clemens Sedmak

This book is the fruit of a close collaboration between three leading scholars with a background in systematics, philosophical theology and ethics. It sets out a new account of how incarnation is mediated in the world of space and time, leading to a new orientation of theology within the world. The doctrinal ("from above") and philosophical ("from below") sections lead to a new exposition of Christian life in confrontation with deepseated problems of ethics and justice. The three pieces closely interweave with each other in the elaboration of a new kind of practical, doctrinal theology of full philosophical integrity.

Review
'Communicating Strategy communicates well - in direct and accessible language. Phil articulates a route to success by both building on the strengths of relationships at work and by demonstrating how to deal with the disconnect that can occur in leading change when strategy is not jointly owned. Phil's research has evidently been done and applied to his conclusions. Above all, it is apparent that he has walked the approach he advocates.....Well Communicated.' -- Shelagh Grant, Chief Executive, The Housing Forum

'Each chapter of 'Communicating Strategy' poses practical business strategy questions. If you can answer them, you've obviously read the book - if you can't it's time you did!' -- Philip Dearing, Managing Director - Mutual One Limited

'Even the most well conceived strategies can be next to worthless if they are not communicated properly, understood fully or used to shape decision making actively - at all levels in an organisation. Phil Jones' insights into how businesses can make this happen are remarkable for their clarity, well grounded and - best of all - demonstrably effective! He has created a wonderfully pragmatic guidebook for achieving success.' -- Ken Douglas, Technology Director, Office of the CTO, BP International Ltd

'Everything in this book is obvious - after you have read it. It is a practical book you can use and apply every day, as well as being a guide to planning a larger communication strategy'. -- Martin Coombes, Partner, Innovation llp

'The messages in this book are important for anyone interested in strategy! Phil Jones discusses the critical issue of communicating strategy - and what's best - he communicates his messages in a very engaging and easy to understand manner.' -- Bernard Marr, Chief Executive, The Advanced Performance Institute

It provides a clear framework for building a communication plan as well as practical information, techniques, tools, tips and exercises that can be applied to explain and deliver a complete and coherent message.

There is guidance on how to identify likely obstacles to change and how the psychology behind your story - and the language you use - can help create change champions; as well as details of how to use metaphor, quotations and imagery to paint a vivid picture.

The author also explores the reasons why your organization's structure, processes and culture may stifle your story and the steps you can take to align each of these to the strategy.

This is an exceptional book that includes elements of organizational theory, human psychology and good, straightforward common sense.

If you believe that people will do a better job if they understand what you are thinking and what you want, this book is for you.

Not the gem I'd hoped for
By Rodney Gray
I have been trying to read this book for many months. I've taken it on a good few airline flights and read all of it one way or another. But it's been a struggle. Because of the title I know I should love it. However, despite the author's well-meaning efforts, it failed to excite me.

Maybe the stupid cover illustrations got our relationship off on the wrong foot. (The back cover is similar to the front but with the cans on strings coming out of computer screens.) I realise the author may have had no say in this, but surely someone associated with the publication has heard Bill Quirke's little ditty that "information travels over wires but communication happens between the ears". Anyhow, screaming the strategy into a one way channel is not the way to go.

It's not that there is anything particularly "wrong" about the book. New practitioners may well find it helpful. It wanders around a vast number of aspects of internal communication and discusses each reasonably thoroughly in a paperback of 10 chapters over 179 pages. Lots of it is common sense, much is interesting, and there is the odd gem. The best part by far is a detailed five page table covering the features, advantages and disadvantages of various channels.

In short, it's not the wonderful guidebook to communication strategy I had anticipated. My suggestion is to have a careful look at the contents before you buy. It is well set out with subheadings, lists, tables and diagrams though. If you are interested in learning all about communicating strategy the guru is Lester Potter. His "The Communication Plan: The Heart of Strategic Communication" (Third edition, USD159 from IABC) may be a better bet.

Phil Jones succeeded to provide an excellent guide for communicating the most important message of the organization you work for. The strategy of the organization is usually well prepared but often not in the minds of the people involved. This book gives you the tools to achieve this.

Organizational Transactional Analysis is a discipline whose focus is on enabling effective communication at all levels of the organization. It looks at development and change from the individual, team, department and organizational levels. This book, and Organizational TA as a whole, operates from an assumption of health - this is a very different approach from other communication methodologies which tend to focus on the problems. TA focuses on building on what is already working, rather than what isn't. From their many years of experience, Anita Mountain and Chris Davidson are convinced that TA offers everyone within the workforce different options on how to relate. Working Together offers up-to-date theory developed by the authors through their extensive knowledge of TA and of the business world. The clear explanations and diagrams in the book outline how you can develop and maintain effective communication and be aware of the processes involved in carrying out decisions and strategies. With chapters on how to apply TA in the workplace Working Together is a down-to-earth yet intelligent read and an important resource for those who wish to improve the quality of relationships and improve productivity. It will be of value to individuals, leaders and managers at all levels. Whether the issue is emotional intelligence, stress, poor communication or different departmental/regional perspectives, this book offers a toolkit of resources to support the people processes aspects of the business.

Review
'Anita and Chris help us take a fresh look at common workplace frustrations, providing the framework and vocabulary to understand and prevent them. The exercises provided help us change our behaviour at home and in the workplace to help us get the successful outcomes we know we deserve. A "must read" reference book for CEOs, managers, salespeople, trainers and anyone who has ever struggled to understand the human condition!' Nigel Dunand, Professional Development Director, Sandler Training 'Anita and Chris appear on the surface to work a kind of magic - with ease and in a relaxed style. When they talk to people they can see and hear things that other people miss and get to the centre of issues easily and quickly. They have a unique style and approach. This book shows how you and I can take this approach and work that magic for ourselves. Opening up the subject of TA and adding in some real experience and deep knowledge the authors have created a book that unfolds to give away the secret to becoming a great manager or motivator.' Julie Hanson, Owner - The One Company & Sloe Road 'Working Together is one of those rare business books that is easy to read. The style adopted by the authors leads to an immediate understanding of the theory whilst the examples used turn on that light bulb for the reader. Particularly useful are the tasks, it is comforting to know and easy to see that the authors genuinely want to aid the reader in putting the theory into practice. I have found TA very useful in my business and shall be dipping in and out of this book regularly. It will not be in my bookcase but on my desk.' Mark Poultney, Managing Director, Imperial Catering Equipment Ltd/Hatco Corporation

An essential guide for all managers!
By Katherine
This book provides an inspiring new approach to leadership and management. Unlike many self-help guides it has helped me to look at what is working well as what areas I might like to improve. I have had no prior knowledge of transitional analysis and I was impressed how the authors have skilfully presented the concepts in an easily accessible way. The real-life examples are particularly valuable and have helped me adopt a mindful approach in my interactions with others, rather than simply following my reflexes and old habits. The strategies presented in the book have encouraged me to `experiment' and have go at `unsticking' previous stumbling blocks both in the workplace and at home, and as a result I've been able to successfully resolve a number of `difficult' issues that I would have previously tried everything to avoid. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to follow a structured approach to help overcome everyday frustrations and improve productivity and motivation in the work place.

Very good mentor
By mrcirrus2012
Anita's and Chris' book is a very good mentor for all subjects you may encounter in your business- and also your private life.
You learn all about communication, recognizing, making contracts, game playing, leadership, bullying, culture, life balance, in order to cite only some of the valuable chapters of this book. It is written for daily use, it combines in a very professional way the theory behind our behaviour with the way we act. Especially worth mentioning are the many examples which are used to explain the messages of the chapters. A book strongly recommended for organizations and individuals.

Communication and Interaction Made Simple
By Jim Stephens
Working Together if you are responsible for the team or you train people who are this is a must-read book. It puts human interaction using the transactional analysis model into very simple terms that are easy to understand. If you are visual and you like to see concepts and theories illustrated in simple pictures and models this book is a treasure trove of illustrations for you. As a professional trainer, I found it very useful in providing practical illustrations of dysfunctional communications and simple actions to minimize dysfunction.

Myth and History in the Bible (Academic Paperback), by Giovanni Garbini

The Old Testament, and biblical scholarship itself, distinguishes between mythical and historical. This book argues that only historical thing in the Bible is the Bible itself, a superb product of Jewish thought. What is narrated in the Bible is only myth.

Absolutely Fascinating!
By Laura Knight-Jadczyk
As an amateur historian, researcher and author, I spend most of my time reading scholarly papers, articles and books on a wide range of historical topics. Giovanni Garbini is my new favorite and I am hoping that more of his work will be translated into English.

It would be difficult to summarize the many fascinating subjects covered in this small volume: "The Myths of the Origins of Israel, Cain's Impunity, Abraham and Damascus, Reuben's Incest and the Contested Primogeniture, Moses and the Law, Davidic Traditions, The Calf of Bethel, Ezra's Birth, Birth and Death of a Messiah, The End of Myth. In summation, Garbini writes:

"The examination of some aspects, usually neglected, though evident and essential, of the mythic reconstruction of Israel's past and of the figure of its God as the Hebrew religious thought presented them in the Bible presents us an apparently paradoxical situation. The Law and the Prophets ... codify and exalt a kind of religion centred on the cult of Yahweh, national and sole true god, who established the Jerusalem temple as his only seat; from the other, they reveal explicitly the moral inconsistency of that god... his unfulfilled promises and the vacuity of all the practices related to his cult.

"The first chapter of Isaiah, which opens the section of Latter Prophets and, as all the writings placed at the beginning of a collection, gives the key to its interpretation, cannot be more explicit in this regard. The chiefs of Jerusalem, that is the high priests, are called 'rulers of Sodom' and its population 'people of Gomorrah (Isa. 1:10). Against them, in the following verses, God refuses all the cultic practices: sacrifices, burnt offerings, visits to the temple, oblations, incense, new moon, Sabbath, readings, fastings, assemblies, feasts, prayers. It is not pointless to ask ourselves what was the effect on the priests of the obsessive motif, present in all the Bible, of gratitude to Yahweh for the deliverance of Israel from Egypt: such a deliverance never took place and was invented by themselves to allude, probably, to their return from Babylon.

"...[T]he interesting thing is that, apart from the many details concerning the external activities of the priesthood (which any Jew in Jerusalem could easily see with his own eyes), the texts do not contain any information about the structures, the organization and the other activities of the priestly class; it is like seeing only the front of a building.

"In these biblical writings we find not only a description of the religious practices, but often also their history, their meaning and their mythic origin, and since the religion of Israel is the expression of its relationship with Yahweh, all Israel's history becomes the history of this religion. In other words, these books fix a precise moment in the history of Hebrew religion, when a deep reflection on its nature was carried out. On the basis of this reflection, the entire past was reinterpreted (not as it ws, but rather as they wanted it to be) and the future imagined, a glorious future with Jerusalem at the centre of the world."

Garbini writes in History and Ideology in Ancient Israel, amplification of the above problem:

"Biblical Yahwism certainly reflects a monotheistic conception, but at the same time it is something less and something more than monotheism. ...Yahwism seems to be something less than monotheism: God is certainly one, but he is essentially the God of just one people and he acts only with them. If we reflect on this aspect, which is the central nucleus of the Old Testament, we discover that here we have what the historians of religions call henotheism rather than monotheism. On the other hand, Yahwism is also, and perhaps above all, an extremely rational vision of the world and of the privileged position that the people of Israel occupies in the world. So it would be legitimate to ask whether one could consider as a real religion, with all that this word implies.. a doctrine like that taught in the Old Testament in the first millennium BC, which denies the survival of the spirit."

He then asks how it is that a 'religion' which attributes importance to liturgies practiced only in Jerusalem, which denies survival of the human spirit, could even have survived and spread, especially after the destruction of said temple.

Good question.

Myth and History in the Bible is full of detailed linguistic analyses that are rational, sophisticated and, at the same time, easy to follow. An interested non-scholar can easily read this book and begin to understand just exactly what a "religious scam" Judaism really is, though, of course, we have no answer as to how it managed to be foisted on the Western world via its equally mythical Christianity. It also really makes it clear that the Jews have no right to steal the land of the Palestinians at all because their whole history and claim to Palestine is based on myth and fraud.

A definite "must-read" though be prepared for a (very) few awkwardnesses in the translation; I'm sure it wasn't easy to translate academic Italian. Even so, it is a surprising easy read even if you must often pause to consider the importance of Garbini's insights.

A Pauline Theology of Church Leadership (Library of New Testament Studies), by Andrew D. Clarke

Scholarly studies consider Paul's views on leadership tend to fall into one of three camps: 1) the historical development view, which in large measure identifies developments in church practice with developments in Pauline and deutero-Pauline ecclesiology; 2) the synchronic, historical reconstruction, typically making use of Graeco-Roman, social context sources, or social-scientific modelling, focusing on a single congregation, and sometimes distinguishing between the situation to which Paul was responding and the pattern he sought to impose; and 3) the theological/hermeneutical analysis, identifying Paul's particular approach to power and authority, often independently of any detailed reconstruction of the situations to which Paul was responding. Andrew Clarke has explored in an earlier work, Serve the Community of the Church (Eerdmans, 2000), the distinctive, local and historical situations in the various Pauline communities and concluded that there is no evidence that they organised themselves according to a common set of governmental structures which clearly developed with the passage of time. Rather each community was influenced by its own localized, social and cultural context. The present project builds on this, and necessarily focuses on leadership style rather than church order. It seeks to recover from Paul's critical responses, his generic ethos of church leadership, including the ideal qualities, characteristics and task of leaders and the nature of appropriate interaction and engagement with church members. In the light of current, theoretical discussions about power and gender, the study focuses particularly on Paul's attitude towards hierarchy, egalitarianism, authority, responsibility and privilege.

Review
'In this fascinating new monograph Andrew Clarke addresses the impact of Paul's view on leadership within the parameters of the early Christian communities that he planted, as well as the impact thereof on Paul's ecclesiology' Stephan Joubert, University of Pretoria, South Africa

RBL 10/2008 (Stephan Joubert Review of Biblical Literature)

"Clarke's theological analysis of Pauline leadership is recommended for anybody interested in the topic ... A Pauline Theology of Church Leadership fills an important gap in contemporary scholarship by collating the fundamental teachings of Paul on an important ecclesiologial theme ... Clarke's compilation of Pauline leadership principles is an excellent contribution in many ways. His awareness of significant tensions within both the Pauline literature and contemporary scholarship deeply informs his theological queries. Moreover, Clarke's expertise in NT social history surfaces throughout as he illuminates many details pertaining to the original context of Paul's letters. Finally, Clarke's analyses of concepts such as power, rhetoric and imitation demonstrate his attentiveness to the inner workings of the apostle, which have previously been overlooked in shallower theologies ... Clarke has produced an erudite and thought-provoking volume which will be a tremendous resource for any scholar, pastor, or student interested in this topic." John K. Leadership In a Different Manner
By Patrick R. Novak
Andrew Clarke does a fine job of describing a Pauline theology of church leadership. Unlike many popular works describing current models of leadership, Clarke keeps his focus on the Pauline corpus with an eye to the changes, if any, in Paul's description of leadership across time. Clarke specifically argues that to understand leadership from a Pauline perspective, one must understand that the household is the central context of Paul's view of the local church. Given the cultural setting, Pauline leadership is hierarchical.

Clarke argues that the essential tools for leadership are teaching and personal discipleship by leaders within the community. In this regard, Clarke's analysis would have been greatly enhanced by a discussion of the insights of Michael Polanyi. Reading Clarke, one wonders if the way in which we train leadership for churches today in anyway follows the Pauline model.

This is a fine book. It provides a rich deposit of fresh scholarship. At this price, few will take the plunge, opting instead for the easily digestable books found in Christian bookstores in which it is sufficient to simply read the table of contents in order to understand 90% of the entire book!

By Kevin Michael
If you're looking for a quick overview of the topics of church leadership, this can certainly be your book. Clarke did a good job of covering the basics, and while it may not be an in-depth academic resource it is certainly a good read to get started.

Warmonger (Doctor Who), by Terrance Dicks

A chain of events has been set in motion that will change the Doctor and Peri forever. A chain that involves old enemies as well as old friends. How does Peri come to be the leader of a gang of rebel fighters on an outlying planet? Who is the mysterious 'General' against whom they are rebelling so violently? Where does the so-called 'Supremo', leader of the Alliance forces ranged against the General, come from, and why is he so interested in Peri? The answers lie in the origins of a conflict that will affect the whole cosmos - a conflict that will find humans, Sontarans, Draconians and even Cybermen fighting together for the greater good and glory. For the Supremo. It is a conflict that will test both the Doctor and Peri to the limit, and bring them face to face with the dark sides of their own personalities.

Roger Moore as the Doctor...!?!?
By Eric Troup
I really should preface this review by stating that I am fairly new to the universe of Doctor Who. I've heard many of the Big Fnish audio productions, and I've seen a fair amouint of shows from the series (but comparatively few; just enough to know I love the show, but not enough to be able to carry on an intelligent debate about any particular eras of the show). One of my least-familiar areas is of the 5th Doctor. I know him from the Big Finish audios, but have only seen one series story (Resurrection of the Daleks). So when I read "Warmonger" and thought certain things seemed ... off, I figured maybe it was just me not being knowledgable enough about this particular incarnation of the Doctor. But it would seem that was not the case. As I read more and more of this book, it seemed that things just got more and more out of character from where they should be.

Now, I should point out that this book is actually a lot of fun to read if you turn your mind off. I'd say the less you know about Doctor Who, the better you'll like this book. Problem is, the book is clearly written with fans in mind, with little nods hither and thither to other Doctor Who adventures, science-fiction conventions, and even a nod to Douglas Adams, who apparently was a writer on Doctor Who before he wrote HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (If he was more than merely a writer, I appologize to any Whovian who is now "aaaargh"ing in frustration at me right now.)

As I think about this book, having just finished it, what springs to mind is this: I think I would've enjoyed this book much more when I was around thirteen (I'm thirty-three now), back when I loved Roger Moore as James Bond and didn't like those Connery films or the Bond books because they weren't nearly as action-packed and didn't use enough of those cool gadgets. This Doctor Who novel has everything I could've asked for as a younger fan of DOctor Who--huge space- and ground-battles, the Doctor being pretty bad-ass and not afraid to show it, a close encounter with a sexual liaison between the Doctor and his companion ... Time Lords, Cybermen, Ice Warriors, Sontaurans ... about the only thing missing from this juvenile-fanboy recipe are the Daleks.

But just as I outgrew Roger Moore as James Bond and came to appreciate the Connery era as being much more intelligent, suspenseful and overall more satisfying, not despite a lack of copious action scenes and gadgets, but in many ways *because* of it, so hve I come to appreciate a more mateur and subtle form of Doctor Who, one that doesn't need a lot of gimickry and action to tell a rollicking adventure story.

What makes this all the more frustrating is the fact that the story is written by Terrance Dicks, a man who has been working in the Doctor Who universe since at least the 1970s. He should know better. I'm apparently a rare bird in that I actually like his "simplistic" writing style ... but I need more meat from my Doctor Who than this book provides, and that's a shame, because the story itself is an interesting one.

In summation, if you like the ROger Moore films in the James Bond series, particularly the Moonraker variety, and you want similar sensibilities in Doctor Who, you'll probably love this book. However, if you want something more substantial and ... er ... filling from you favorite Time Lord, I'd advise you to find another book. There are plenty in the Doctor Who universe to choose from.

Flash Gordon meets Doctor Who with mostly poor results
By N. Williams
Terrance Dicks script edited the Pertwee years of Doctor Who and wrote scripts for the Troughton, Tom Baker and Peter Davison eras of the show; furthermore, he novelized more of the television stories than any other writer. All of this makes the writer one of the most knowledgeable men of Doctor Who, but sadly T.D. is one of those writers whose works range from genius to boring. One never knows what to expect from a T.D. production, and I'm sad to report this one of his less respectable stories.

Warmonger is a prequel to the Fourth Doctor television story The Brain of Morbius, which itself was an homage to Frankenstein; it's one of Doctor Who's most enjoyable stories. Despite being a prequel, Warmonger features the Fifth Doctor and Peri and details the war which left Morbius' brain headless. The novel reads like a bad Star Wars novel with unlikely alliances between Timelords, Sontarans, Ice Warriors, Draconians, Ogrons and Cybermen. At no point was I ever convinced these races would ally to fight the evil, vane and utterly idiotic Morbius. And because Morbius is incompetent, I never remotely begin to believe he could lead an army to conquer the universe, just as I can never believe Peri (one of the whiniest companions in Doctor Who history) as a guerilla commander. Also, the Fifth Doctor seems out of place here as the great Supremo who leads his army against that of Morbius. I've always pictured the Fifth Doctor as more of a pacifist. The Sixth Doctor seems a more credible choice to spearhead this story. None of the characters fit their places -- we have square characters being put in round holes. This story is all too epic to be crammed into one 280+ page novel and the plot relies far too much on miscast stereotypes to fit into one volume. With the right pieces and three volumes, this could have been a masterpiece.

I do like some of the book's earlier moments. The book begins with Peri's exploits as a rebel commander, and I kept turning pages to discover how Peri turned into this rough, tough, take-no-prisoners character. The Doctor's reasons for journeying to a pre-Brain of Morbius Karn all seem viable, and it was great to visit The Sisterhood again, although they play far too small a role in this book.

In short, too much is crammed into this tale and the results are totally unconvincing. For a better sampling of T.D.'s Doctor Who writing search for the brilliant Virgin novel "Blood Harvest."

Hilariously bad...I loved it!
By Celeste Chang
Ok. It's by Terrance Dicks. So you know it'll have a bunch of continuity references to other Terrance Dicks Doctor Who stories. Plus a bunch of new continuity nightmares introduced in the course of "explaining" previous gaps or errors. In this case, it's a sort of prequel to (the TV story) "The Brain of Morbius" (also hilariously bad if you think about the plot, which apparently made more sense before Terrance Dicks took his name off the credits, but otherwise wonderful and fun to watch), and also possibly some attempt to explain why Peri would run off with a barbarian warlord king person in her departure from the show.

It's by Terrance Dicks. So it's a fast, smooth read, with no weird stylistic experiments or plodding prose. The madness fairly flies off the page. Yes, yes, with the WW2 references in there, too.

Peri is a guerilla leader! The Fifth Doctor is a scary warlord in a black uniform! Uniting Sontarans, Draconians, Ogrons, and Cybermen and others in a great big space fleet!

No, I don't believe a word of it, either. But I couldn't stop laughing. What was Uncle Terry smoking when he wrote this and where can I get some?

My only real disappointment was that Morbius didn't get to have a longer and more impressive reign as Galactic Emperor before his brain got nicked by Dr. Solon.
