Its six foundational essays reflect a diversity of perspectives rather than a monolithic or myopic point of view, while the responses to these essays by its sympathetic interlocutors, Craig Bartholomew, Jimmy Dunn, and Walter Moberly-contributions alone worth the price of the book-lodge incisive critiques, to which the Pentecostal and charismatic authors of the original essays offer further responses. Though not the first word on the subject and certainly not the last, according to both authors and critics in this volume,this is nonetheless a substantial, scholarly word that should be pivotal in the ongoing effort to carve out a sane and spirit-filled approach to the interpretation of scripture. -- John R. An Amazing Commentary on the Greek Text of Romans

This commentary on Romans by Cranfield is by far the best ever written on the Greek text of Romans. His approach is to deal with each problem of interpretation by listing and describing the various options, then analyzing each in turn until he gives the reasons for his own conclusions. While you may not agree with his argumentation, you know that he has done a full analysis and presented good reasons for his views. Get both volumes, and forget the "shorter" one-volume edition.

One of the finest exegetical commentaries on a N.T. book!

This is a model commentary and one of the best exegetical commentaries ever written on a Greek text. For good exposition, this is an excellent help and resource. (Much better than the abridged version, obviously!) Get BOTH volumes. This should be in every pastor's and Bible student's library.

Patient self-reported data has become increasingly important in today's clinical trials. Trials in some disease indications rely upon patient recorded diary data as the primary endpoint to demonstrate drug efficacy - including, for example, indications such as insomnia, migraine and pain. Traditionally these data have been collected using paper questionnaires and diaries issued to subjects. As a result there is a growing interest in collection of patient reported outcomes data using electronic means (ePRO). Solutions include handheld PDAs, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, and other site-based hardware such as touchscreen PCs. Recently, there has been much open debate with the regulators around the use of ePRO in clinical drug submissions. US and European agencies have approved new drugs that have included ePRO data in the submission dossier, but there are many questions around the adoption of the technology that concern the community. These include: ¢ How should instruments developed on paper be adapted for electronic use, and what degree of validation should be done between paper and electronic forms? ¢ How can researchers ensure they are complying with regulatory requirements including the PRO guidance published by FDA in 2009 when using ePRO solutions? ¢ Can fewer patients be exposed in a clinical trial as a result of improved data quality obtained using electronic diaries? ¢ What type of solution should be used for certain patient populations and protocols, and how can ePRO solutions be designed optimally to increase patient acceptability and compliance? About the Author
Bill Byrom completed his PhD in disease control simulation at Strathclyde University in 1990 and this work took him to Africa to study the effects and spread of cattle diseases. This interest led him to join the Pharmaceutical industry in 1991 where he began as a clinical trial statistician. Bill transitioned to clinical development where he became a trial director working in a number of early phase therapy areas. Before joining ClinPhone in 2000, Bill took on responsibility for the scientific content of the European market launch of a new antipsychotic agent. Throughout his clinical trials experience Bill maintained an active interest in how new technologies and methodologies could be leveraged in clinical development programmes, and so his move to Perceptive Informatics (formerly ClinPhone) in 2000 was an ideal fit. In his role as Senior Director of Product Strategy he has helped to shape a number of the company's products and services including ePRO solutions, patient recruitment technologies and RTSM (Randomization and Trial Supply Management) solutions. Bill is currently responsible for the company's eClinical strategy. Bill has authored over 60 articles in international and trade journals, and is a regular speaker on the conference circuit. Brian Tiplady, B.A., Ph.D is Senior Clinical Scientist at Pro Consulting, a division of Invivodata Inc. Brian Tiplady started in the pharmaceutical industry in 1976 as a Neuroscientist carrying out clinical research in depression and senile dementia. He later became responsible for data management and statistics, and has worked on every stage of the clinical trial process. He started working with electronic patient reported outcomes (ePRO) in 1993. He has carried out and published evaluation studies on patient use of pen-based handheld diaries and questionnaires, supported in-house projects, and worked with strategic and logistic issues involved in effectively using ePRO, and in evaluating the benefits obtained. He currently works with PRO Consulting, a division of Invivodat Inc, providing scientific support for the development and deployment of ePRO methods in clinical trials.

The Reverend Victor Lee Austin, Ph.D., is Theologian-in-residence at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City. He is the author of scholarly articles in political theology, ecclesiology, and social ethics, as well as two volumes of theological reflections on everyday life: "A Priest's Journal," and more recently, "Priest in New York: Church, Street, and Theology."

An essay on Leadership

What is the role of "authority" or "leadership" in human society; is it necessity or are "free" people correct in rejecting authority.

The author, Victor Austin, a teacher, theologian, and Episcopal priest, argues that "authority" is a human necessity deriving from the fact that men and women life in social communities by nature and choice and never have lived otherwise. Whether seen as authority, direction, leadership, and these terms do have different meanings and the author often uses "authority" in its various connotations, his point is that for individuals to florish and be the best that the can maximizing their individual talents they must, paradoxically, have authoritative direction. At the same time, he shows that authority itself is not flawless (since it is human) and therefore to be questioned.

This book is excellent corrective to the current popular thinking. The author clearly has given this matter great thoought calling upon resources and writings over the centuries. His argument is clearly presented and while this book is clearly not for those looking for a little light reading before bedtime, the reading will be well rewarded.

Totally nice

The TARDIS materializes in a tourist park which houses a unique attraction that enables one to experience what it's like to be dead - without being obligated to remain so. But a freak mishap has caused the participants to become murderous zombies. The Doctor arrives just after the crisis has passed, and in a welcome deviation from the norm, he is not blamed for the incident (not at first, anyway), but praised for saving the day.
The strange thing, of course, is that he hasn't done anything yet. The stranger thing is that he died while doing it. So our heroes travel further and further back in time to figure out exactly what happened. It's great fun to see all the bits fall into place as the novel progresses. The author handles the different timelines beautifully, and keeps it from being as confusing as it might have been.
The story may be a bit morbid, but this is an extremely funny book nonetheless. The story, dialogue and supporting cast fit right in with the high camp nature of the era from which it is derived. Most importantly, the characters of The Doctor, Romana and even K9 are flawlessly written, down to the most detailed mannerism. It's such a faithful recreation that you'll swear you'd seen it on TV. If you're a fan of the fourth Doctor, this is a must-read.

Backwards in time to save the present

"Festival of Death" is a novel set just before the last season of the most popular of Doctors, Tom Baker. It's an odd place - Baker's second last season is (in my opinion) one of the worst in the show's history, while his last was a return to the excellence that accompanied Baker's arrival in the role.
This book therefore manages to combine some of the odd humour of season sixteen with the better production quality of season seventeen. Into the bargain, a story idea that should have been used in the show at some time is featured. The Doctor, Romana and K9 arrive at a place where they have just been, and must travel back in time to carry out the activities that they have been told they have done.
Like the last month's Past Doctor novel, Imperial Moon, the Doctor has some foreknowledge of what is happening but must act to preserve the web of time. And in this case, the Doctor is told he sacrificed his life to save the day.
Given the crossing of the timelines inherent in the story, Jonathan Morris does an excellent job in making the story plain when it could have been confusing. He does this in two ways: firstly, with strong and memorable scenes which stay in the reader's mind; and secondly, by use of somewhat cliched characters. Obviously, I approve of the former but the latter is another harking back to season sixteen.
"Festival of Death" is a good read, and given the similarity of theme to "Imperial Moon" it is interesting to compare and contrast the two different incarnations of the Doctor in their approaches.

Doctor Who as it should be!

Festival of Death is full of the illogical wit, wisdom, and fun that made Doctor Who great! Reading this is like finding a lost tv episode. The Doctor, Romana, and K-9 are so well realized it's like watching them on the screen!
The story starts out with Romana insisting that the Doctor take a "time travel proficiency test" a sort of driving test for a Tardis. And being the Doctor, well....
They land on a space station in the aftermath of a catastrophe, dead and wounded lying everywhere. Naturally they jump in to help. Only to find out that they've already helped! The Doctor is recognized as the savior of the G-Lock. And as a saboteur, and a spy, and a friend, and an escaped criminal....
The Doctor and Romana realize they have skipped their own time traces and must go back in time to do whatever they did the first time to save the station.
But they're recognized again. And again! Each time they go back they are faced with solving the present problems without changing what those problems become in the future, and without running into themselves in the process!
Soon the Doctor and Romana are running all over the G-Lock narrowly avoiding their own past and future selves. And the closer they come to the heart of the disaster the more mysterious it becomes. Until the Doctor does what he always knew he must do to save the station.
He dies.
For everyone who likes classic, clean, monstery, funny Doctor Who this is the book for you!

About the Author
Dr Alzira Salama is a management consultant and a senior lecturer at the London campus of the European School of Economics (ESE), where she was Academic Director for four years. She has a PhD in Organizational Behaviour from Lancaster University. Before embarking on academic life Alzira Salama worked for ten years as Management Development Manager for Verolme do Brazil, a large Dutch shipyard, and as an Executive Education specialist at Xerox Corporation. This experience has been fundamental for her understanding of human behaviour issues at the work place. Alzira Salama lectured at Cranfield School of Management. She was a visiting researcher and lecturer at the European Business School (EBS), London and at the London School of Economics (LSE). She has been involved in action research projects, delivered many conference papers and is widely published, winning awards in the process. Her earlier book is entitled Privatization: Implications for Corporate Culture Change.

About the Author

Charles Yrigoyen, Jr. is General Secretary emeritus of the General Commission on Archives and History, the United Methodist Church. He is Director of United Methodist Studies at Evangelical Theological Seminary and Lancaster Theological Seminary. He has been editor of Methodist History and Historical Dictionary of Methodism, and is author of books on John and Charles Wesley and Methodist theology.
