This book argues that Mark's gospel was not written as late as c. 65-75 CE, but dates from sometime between the late 30s and early 40s CE. It challenges the use of the external evidence (such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria) often used for dating Mark, relying instead on internal evidence from the gospel itself. James Crossley also questions the view that Mark 13 reflects the Jewish war, arguing that there are other plausible historical settings.

Crossley argues that Mark's gospel takes for granted that Jesus fully observed biblical law and that Mark could only make such an assumption at a time when Christianity was largely law observant: and this could not have been later than the mid-40s, from which point on certain Jewish and gentile Christians were no longer observing some biblical laws (e.g. food, Sabbath).

Mark the Date...

I'm giving this 4 stars even though I wasn't persuaded by the case being made. 4 stars because it is definitely the best possible case one can make for an early composition of the Gospel of Mark.

Crossley has set his argument into two halves. The first half addresses the standard arguments that bolster the current consensus view of a 65-75CE dating. Here, Crossley attempts to show why the arguments for such a date (typically involving potential allusions to the Jewish War and Neronian persecutions of the mid-60sCE) aren't as strong as typically implied, and that the earlier historical events such as the 'Caligula crisis' of the mid-late 30sCE can make just as much sense of such allusions. The second half is the more positive case where he tries to make connections to events in the 40sCE such as disputes over Torah observance within Judaism, and the 'gentile mission' which Crossley sees as quite early.

This is a fairly dense work primarily for scholars and those with higher-education-level knowledge of New Testament studies. So ensure you have access to as many of the ancient texts that will be alluded to as possible (Bible w/apocrypha, Josephus, Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.). Often he simply references their chapter+verse without quotation. Similarly, he'll sometimes quote a koine greek phrase without an English translation in sight, assuming you know the basics of the language.

Overall, this is a very important work for NT studies. Given that Markan priority is all but assumed now (and rightly so, in my opinion), assigning a reliable date to the gospel has relevance of significant portion for the rest of NT studies (e.g. if Mark is 65-75CE, then the case for Luke-Acts being pre-65CE also falls to the wayside given it's author's reliance on Mark, etc.). Crossley wasn't able to convince me that verses in Mark like 12:9, 13:1-2, or the sandwiching of the 'storming of the Temple' with the 'cursing of the fig tree' pericope, don't make better sense in a post-70CE setting. But he has certainly highlighted some potential problems with such a reading.

A descriptive, and systematic coverage of facilitation

The approach taken is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Indeed, the authors insist that it is neither possible nor desirable to set out a prescriptive approach to build a learning organisation. The book relies heavily on extended case studies and includes substantial biographical detail on the leaders and key facilitators in the selected cases, as well as extended invited contributions by four of them. These case studies are used to illustrate the main shared features that the authors have observed in successful transformation to an organisation that is able to learn as part of its continuing functioning. Key features on which they focus include the use of 'action technologies' (action research, action learning and action science), a systemic view of change and an emphasis on the power of partnership between HR professionals and line managers.
The three 'action technologies' that lie at the heart of their preferred methodologies are jargon terms for: ß a research and design methodology that iterates from diagnosis through vision building and alignment to experiments and reassessment ß action learning using a number of devices to integrate learning and work, and ß the use of the techniques of skilled conversation and group learning to identify and resolve issues - the process of cycling between action and reflection and the principles involved in 'double loop learning' The conclusions are unsurprising, but it is useful to see them reinforced.
The authors do a service in reminding us that, while there are universal underlying principles, the move towards a learning organisation is an exploration and its steps can not be codified. Those who like to learn through case studies will find the book useful and practising facilitators will probably find it useful to 'compare notes' with those quoted in the book. However, it certainly does not replace any of my established favourites in this field.

Understanding of the religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Israelites has changed considerably in recent years. It is now increasingly accepted that the biblical presentation of Israelite religion is often at odds with the historical realities of ancient Israel's religious climate. As such, the diversity inherent to ancient Israelite religion is often overlooked―particularly within university lecture halls and classrooms. This textbook draws together specialists in the field to explain, illustrate and analyze this religious diversity. Following an introductory essay guiding the reader through the book, the collection falls into three sections.

The first focuses on conceptual diversities. It deconstructs common assumptions about Israelite religion and reconstructs Israelite perceptions of the nature of the religious world. The second section examines socio-religious diversities. It studies the varied social contexts of ancient Israelites, exploring the relationship between worshippers' social locations and their perceptions and experiences of the divine. The third section deals with geographical diversities. It seeks to understand how geographical distinctions engender certain characteristics within Israelite religion and impact upon religious perceptions.

Underpinning each essay in this volume is a shared concern to: (1) explore the ways in which worshippers' socio-cultural contexts shape and colour their religious beliefs and practices; (2) assess the role, benefits and limitations of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament in reconstructing ancient Israelite religion.

Not light reading, but a very important book

The casual reader may find this book tough going because it makes extensive use of the vocabulary of archeology, anthropology, sociology, linquistics, theology and history, and includes numerous citations from leading works in all of those fields. That well-informed interdisciplinary approach, however, makes it possible for the authors and editors of this book to offer the reader an unparalleled synthesis of a vast amount of recent data. Taken as a whole, this book makes major strides towards putting to rest for once and for all such hackneyed dogmatic intellectual sloppiness as the idea that there was a uniform "popular religion" and/or a uniform "official religion" across the Levant at any given time, or the notion that worship of any deity can ever exist in an historical or cultural or geographic vacuum (as some theologians might prefer to imagine). Generally (and refreshingly), the authors whose works are contained in this volume stand firmly in a middle ground between treating the bible as sacrosanct and disregarding it all togther. In particular, I found the esaay by Herbert Niehr (Chapter 3) to be one of the best, most insightful, discussions of the "Canaanite"/ "Israelite" biblical dichotomy that I have read anywhere. This is a scholarly book in the best sense of the word.

Great contribution and a must-read

This new volume from T&T Clark, edited by Francesca Stavrakopoulou and John Barton, combines essays from a diverse and international field of scholars focused on the diversity of religious belief and practice in ancient Israel and Judah. A number of concerns guide the volume's contributions. It seeks primarily to combat the traditional notion of a monolithic Israelite religion, and, as the title suggests, finds value in evaluating religious diversity within the separate kingdoms of Judah and Israel. The social contexts of religious belief and expression play a large role in these analyses. Of considerable significance is the book's opposition to the presumption of a division between "official" religion of the biblical authors, and the "popular" religion of the apostate factions. This distinction is shown to be artificial and derived from an uncritical acceptance of the value judgments of the biblical authors. There are a number of valuable contributions within this volume, but the identification of that false dichotomy alone should make this book required reading.

The volume is divided into four sections entitled "Conceptual Diversities," "Socio-Religious Diversities," "Geographic Diversities," and a "Postscript" by John Barton. The papers in the first section address broad approaches to the complexity of religious diversity. Susan Niditch's contribution engages the experiential within Israelite religion. Three categories of texts provide case studies: descriptions of visits to the divine realms, descriptions of earthly visions, and descriptions of the underworld and of contact with the dead. I found some of Susan's syntheses a bit strained. The topic of Herbert Niehr's paper is the false dichotomy between Israelite and Canaanite religion. The Hebrew Bible paints a picture of stark contrast between Israel and the indigenous "Canaanites," but does this contrast exist outside the propaganda of the biblical authors? Niehr addresses historical, literary, and religio-historical aspects of the distinction and concludes with a discussion of Judahite and Israelite religion as a subset of West Semitic religion. Similarly, Francesca Stavrakopouou's article takes direct aim at the scholarly presumption of a division between the "official" religion of the biblical authors and the "popular" religion of apostate factions. This presumption, the author argues, is largely an attempt to "'manage' biblical and archaeological indications of religious diversity in ancient Israel and Judah" (p. 37). Stavrakopoulou evaluates theological and social-scientific constructs of this view of Israelite religion and highlights its inadequacy as a framework for the religious diversity of ancient Israel and Judah. The latter two papers are, in my opinion, the highlights of this volume.

The second section, "Socio-Religious Diversities," is a more focused approach to the theme of the preceding section. It is the largest section of the book and seeks to "demonstrate that the religions of ancient Israel and Judah can best be understood as a series of spectra, rather than in terms of either/or distinctions" (p. 4). In the first article Nicolas Wyatt examines the nature of ancient Judahite royal ideologies. While presented in the Hebrew Bible as a heavily adapted foreign importation, Wyatt argues the normal elements of Syro-Palestinian royal religion are detectable within the Judahite ideology of kingship. This ideology should be viewed as genetically related to those of surrounding cultures. The king's participation in ritual as subject and object, his divinity in life and death, and his relationship to Asherah are all evinced to some degree or another in the biblical text and by analogy with surrounding cultures. Diana Edelman follows, presenting biblical and artifact evidence for "Cultic Sites and Complexes beyond the Jerusalem Temple." The Hebrew Bible makes numerous references to cultic sites outside of Jerusalem, but they are vaguely defined and are polemicized by the text's authors and editors. Material remains confirm the existence of a wide range of cultic sites throughout the time period of the Bible, and show a sharp decline in number in the Persian Period and later, but do not provide enough data to pinpoint the introduction of cultic worship or its centralization.

Philip Davies authors the next article, which explores the distinction between urban and rural religion. The exploration is encumbered by the biblical and material bias toward urban contexts. The Bible largely polemicizes rural religion and idealizes urban religion, but some inferences and tentative conclusions can be made. Davies concludes with a caution against presuming a rural origin for the biblical texts. Carol Meyers' article treats the topic of household religion. She begins with a description of the Israelite household, followed by sources for its investigation. The third section of her chapter discusses those manifestations of household religion that can be extrapolated from the biblical text and from comparative anthropology. These practices are categorized according to their regularity. Some were seasonal, monthly, or weekly; others were dictated by the human life cycle; and still others were predicated upon situations requiring divine intervention. Tying them all together were concerns for the sustaining of life, for group identity, and for humanity's relationship to the divine.

Rainer Albretz's chapter is entitled "Personal Piety," and it aims to isolate within the context of folk religion the religious situation of the individual. Albretz identifies three available sources of information from which this situation may be reconstructed: theophoric personal names, individual lament and thanksgiving psalms, and proverbial material. The first two sources manifest a deep-rooted concern for the relationship of the deity to the individual, celebrating and lamenting events which are treated as highly personal acts of God. The last category shows concern for the ethos of the individual vis-à-vis the deity. A short final section evaluates developments in personal piety from the Deuteronomic reforms through to the Second Temple Period.

The last section of this volume examines the geographic dynamic of religious diversity. Jeremy M. Hutton authors the first chapter, which aims to dispel the geographic homogenization of Israelite religion and delineate the religious expression of the north, the south, and Transjordan. Hutton first draws upon archaeological and onomastic evidence to show the degree to which diversity is evident. He moves on to evaluate the Deuteronomic history as a possible source for northern religious practices, producing a great deal of detail from Dtr's polemic. The most interesting section of Hutton's paper is his discussion of the archaeological evidence for a distinct Transjordanian religious identity. Using Deir `Alla as a point of reference, the author produces a picture of religious variegation and tension. He concludes with a preliminary synthesis which sees micro-religions tied together under a macro-religious identity developed largely through literary and editorial manipulation. Lester Grabbe's contribution looks for, but doesn't find indications of Yhwh worship outside of Israel and Judah. A variety of locales are investigated, and Grabbe's essay provides a great deal of information.

Barton's postscript reflects on the broader issues discussed in the book and raises two questions which remain: (1) How did monotheism ever arise within a culture that tolerated and promoted such diverse views on God and the gods, and (2) "why did Judaism, the heir of all these ancient Israelite and Judahite religious practices, become a religion of the book?" He concludes with a warning about treated early Israelite religion as exclusively orthopraxic, rather than orthodoxic. As this volume shows, there was a great deal of reflection and innovation in the theology and religiosity of early Israel and Judah.

The section of Barth's Church Dogmatics this book summaries is one of the richest parts of Barths mega-volume epic -- Barth's theology on the perfections of God. Great stuff, that Barth admits he only touches the mere edges of -- but those "edges" are beautiful to read and meditate on. In both this summary and Barth's epic.

Adomnan, ninth abbot of Iona, wrote his book, On Holy Places (De Locis Sanctis), in the closing years of the seventh century. It is a detailed account of the sites mentioned in the Christian scriptures, the overall topography, and the shrines that are in Palestine and Egypt at that time. It is neatly broken into three parts: Jerusalem, the surrounding areas, and then a few other places. The whole has a contemporary and lively feel; and the reader is then not surprised when Adomnan says he got his information from a 'Gallic bishop name Arculf'. Things then get interesting for the more one probes, the book the amount of information that could have been obtained from Arculf keeps diminishing, while the amount that can be shown to be a reworking of written sources increases. We then see that Adomnan's book is an attempt to compile a biblical studies manual according to the demands of Augustine (354-430) - one of which was that there had to be an empirical witness. Thus, Adomnan wrote the work and employed Arculf as a literary device. However, he produced the desired manual which remained in use until the Reformation.

As a manual we can use it to study the nature of scriptural studies in the Latin world of the time, and perceptions of space, relics, pilgrimage, and Islam. While a study of how the work was used by others, transmitted, reworked (for example by the Venerable Bede) brings unique light onto the theological world of the Carolingians.

About the Author
Professor Chorafas is an academic and consultant. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and visiting faculty to the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). He has been a Fulbright Scholar and has taught in 10 universities around the world. During his career, Dr Chorafas has been a consultant to the board of UBS, Bank Vontobel, Bank of Scotland, Commerzbank, Istituto Bancario Italiano, Credito Commerciale, Banca Provinciale Lombarda, First Austrian Bank, Italcementi, AEG-Telefunken, Osram, General Electric Bull, and a number of other companies. Over 8,000 executives around the world have attended his seminar programme. In 1992, in conjunction with the Swiss Academies of Sciences, he established his Foundation which grants annual awards to the best PhD graduates at 25 partner universities worldwide. Dr Chorafas has authored 153 books on engineering, mathematics, banking and finance. Many of them have got 5 stars out of 5 in rating. Among his most recent are 'Globalization's Limits' and 'The Business of Europe is Politics' and 'Education and Employment in the European Union' (February 2011) published by Gower.
