A Superb Tool for Anyone Learning Akkadian

This book contains the complete text of Hammurabi's Law code in transliteration and in translation, with the transliteration on the left page and the translation on the opposite page. There is also an excellent (and I mean excellent) dictionary in the back of the book. It was uncanny how many times I would be having trouble translating a law and would look up a word in the dictionary, only to find the exact passage I was struggling with quoted and explained in detail. This shows that the author put a lot of thought into the examples included in the dictionary. A list of roots and verbal forms are included also, and these two sections are very useful when you are trying to translate one of Akkadian's notoriously difficult weak verb forms.

This book is not beginner's grammer, in fact it is not a grammer at all. For someone who wants to learn Akkadian, I cannot recomend John Huehnergard's "A Grammer of Akkadian" enough. Once you have learned the basics of Akkadian you can then work through this book by translating the Akkadian transliterations of the laws and comparing your translation to those of the Dr. Richardson. I found this to be a great way to "take the next step" when I was learning Akkadian.

Although others have treated individual psalm quotations as prophecy, my work is the first to examine all of the psalm quotations within the Synoptic Gospels in this light and the first to demonstrate that these excerpts were used prophetically. In some cases, these psalm quotations were used by the Synoptic Evangelists in a manner that is thought to fulfill a prophecy from or about Jesus within the gospel narratives, even though this particular use of the psalms by the Synoptic Evangelists has not been widely recognized previously. This study shows how similar exegetical techniques of looking for prophecies in the Psalms was practiced by non-Christian Jews of the period.

Excellent treatment of the Subject Matter

I choose four starts for this book because for what it covers it is great. The book is divided in three broad sections, starting with Biblical Theology, then moving onto classical and then contemporary theology. It lays good groundwork for the aspiring student. The reason I enjoyed this volume is because of the biblical theology it incorporates at the start. Not many intro theology books look at this (e.g. macgrath, milgore, etc.) The chapters moves nicely into one another.

The bonus of this book is that all the major controversies and movements, protestant and catholic (to a lesser extant eastern orthodox) are treated fairly.

Now onto the sections. The first part looks lays the groundwork for a "Biblical Theology" Themes, of creation, noah, Abraham, and covenant are all treated in good summary fashion. From the patriarchs, he moves onto the kings and prophets and the writings. (He follows the Hebrew canon in this section). In the next part he introduces the Christian movement at it's early days and goes through all the important names and people to Nicaea and beyond. The medical church and reformation comes next.

In contemporary he start of with the Renaissance, the enlightenment/modernism and postmodernist movements. All in all the discussions i found very enlightening (no pun intended) and manyof the pieces challenged me to think hard especially where we come to the modern movements (e.g. freud, darwin etc.)

The author writes well and there is a sprinkled throughout the text of his humor and fondness of paradox. Some of his judgements seem a bit strong and sudden but then he goes onto explain why this would be so.

The book is only an introduction so the reader shouldn't expect a lot of depth but you get all the essentials to make informed decisions about the people, ideas and events being treated.

I like this book. It will make an excellent companion volume to MacGrath Christian Theology and Olsen's Story of Christian Theology, both also available on Amazon.

Female Immigrant Enterpreneurs

Daphne Halkias, Ph.D. and her team of researchers are way ahead of
the curve. They enlighten the reader of a worldwide, socio-economic,
well in-progress, force, that will certainly grow in numbers &
importance. There are increasingly rapid socio-economic, political, cultural shifts & technological advances occuring around the globe. Many females, like their male counterparts, are taking charge of their economic lives & charting their own futures. And migration appears to be a growing part of this process. For anyone (female or male) considering becoming an entrepreneur(even if not relocating domestically or immigrating),& for those who want a preview of future economic activity, this is an interesting & worthwhile read. - Robert Kasavan
