About the Author
Dr John Gattorna recently retired after 6 years building and leading Accenture's Supply Chain Practice in Southern Asia, and was one of the firm's most respected thought leaders. Previously, he ran his own consulting firm for over a decade, specialising in marketing, logistics, and channels strategy, servicing an international clientele. John is generally regarded as one of the world's leading thinkers in the supply chain arena, and is also much sought after as a speaker on the international conference circuit. John has authored/co-authored 10 books and numerous articles on marketing, marketing planning, channels strategy, logistics, and supply chain management. His most recent book, co-authored with Andrew Berger, Supply Chain Cybermastery, was released at the height of the eCommerce era in 2001, and has since been translated into Chinese. His previous book, Strategic Supply Chain Alignment, published in 1998, brought a behavioral dimension to the task of building high performance supply chains. This book has since been translated into Japanese and will shortly be published in Chinese. Although John originally came from industry he has a strong academic background, and has taught on undergraduate, graduate, and senior executive programs at the University of New South Wales and Macquarie University in Sydney; Oxford University; and Cranfield University in the UK. He is currently Visiting Professor in Supply Chain Management at Cranfield. Outside of an intense interest in supply chains John is active in voluntary work, and when time permits indulges in his other passion, golf, at The Australian in Sydney, where his handicap is on the way down.

Put another way, the story's emphasis on Susanna, the Elders, and Daniel as "plausible people" is secondary to its stress on what those characters represent and the message it is relaying through those representations. Clanton analyzes chronologically selected aesthetic interpretations of the story found in the Renaissance. He shows that the prevailing artistic interpretation during the Renaissance focused on the mimetic, sexual aspects of the story because it deals with issues of patronage, and sex/gender that were current at the time. The Good, the Bold, the Beautiful argues that several Renaissance renderings provide counter readings that focus more on the value and themes in the story. These renderings provide models for readers to resist the sexually exploitative features of both the narrative and its interpretations. Clanton reflects on the need for the reader to resist potentially harmful interpretation, especially those that focus on the mimetic level of the story's rhetoric.

Must read for beginner to advanced student!

As a student of Tarmo Toom who has enjoyed his classes, I looked forward to reading this text. In a certain sense, this book is like three books. In the first part, Tarmo Toom explains the basics of Trinitarian theology in a manner and style that most should be able to grasp easily. After reading this part, one should be able to articulate orthodox Christian beliefs to any English speaker. In the second part, he revists these concepts in more detail and identifies the theologians who were involved in the search to articulate accurately Trinitarian theology. He explains the positions of those theologians whose teachings were later recognized as orthodox as well as those whose teachings were rejected. I found his use of charts to be extremely helpful in his classes and am glad that he included them in this book. In the third part, he identifies those texts that will allow the reader to find the primary sources.

I highly recommend this book because it is one that can benefit most any Christian or student of theology at any stage.

Graham Oakes helps people untangle complex technology, relationships, processes and governance. As an independent consultant, he helps organizations such as Sony Computer Entertainment, The Open University, the Council of Europe and the Port of Dover to define strategy, initiate projects and hence run those projects effectively. Prior to going independent, he was Director of Technology at Sapient Limited, where he ran the project review process for the UK Business Unit. Before that he was Head of Project Management for Psygnosis Ltd (a subsidiary of Sony), where he ran Independent Project Assurance teams working across the UK, Europe and the USA. Graham writes a regular column for EvaluationCentre.com (now part of the National Computer Centre), and occasional articles for publications such as the Financial Times, Free Software Magazine and Project magazine. He was a medallist in the British Computer Society IT Consultancy of the Year Awards for 2007.

Performing a review: this is your starting point

If you become responsible for assurance of projects and programmes, Graham Oakes' book is the perfect starting point.
This book will help you to learn from your own mistakes and understand what is really going on in your projects. The core of this book is built around a number of models for review processes and governance. These models have been derived from practice and between the different chapters you will find case studies and examples. You will find four parts:
- Part I, the introduction explaining project success and project failure and the need for project reviews and assurance to help to understand what's really going on in the projects. This part also looks at the different types of reviews.
- Part II looks at the Project review process itself. Effective project reviews needs more structure than a simple meeting or checklist. To add most value, reviewers need to be able to do four things: Agree terms of reference with the review's sponsor, where to look for information, identify what standards and `good practices' they will review against and last they need a clear understanding of what activities they will undertake. These four things are visualized in a systems model for a review. Several chapters will help you to understand and use this review model. The review parameters are explained, organizational learning, the importance of evidence and logistics matter are described. This part was completed with a table with signs of project stress and an extensive review checklist.
- Part III looks at the challenge to performing effective reviews: getting people to act on their findings. It sets out a simple model for mapping spheres of influence. This so-called `governance matrix' will help you to think about who is accountable for which decisions, and hence what sort of information you need to give them. This three level model: Steer, Manage and Execute perfectly fits with the three levels of Prince2 version 2009. In the Prince2 process model we now also see the levels Directing, Managing and Delivering. Next topic is the importance to frame effective findings and recommendations. Make sure you separate facts, interpretation and recommendations. The last chapter discussed the gaps and overlaps in governance. It looks at the way in which Prince2 looks at assurance (responsibility of the Project board) and what role your PMO can play. Assurance and the PMO must complement each other.
- Part IV looks at some of the factors that need to be considered when setting up a project review or assurance function within an organization, both from an organizational perspective as from the individual reviewer or review team perspective. A business case for reviews, the establishment of a review process and options for funding a review or assurance programme are explained.

For me this is a very helpful book, especially the systems model, the `governance matrix', the extensive review matrix and how to perform effective reviews.

About the Author
Nigel Iyer is a practitioner in fraud and corruption risk management with an emphasis on proactive prevention. Martin Samociuk was also a practitioner in fraud and corruption risk management. Both have extensive practical experience in this field in most parts of the world. The authors founded the Hibis Group (www.hibis.com), a consultancy specializing in helping organisations improve their resistance to fraud. They co-authored 'Fraud and Corruption: Prevention and Detection', published by Gower. Martin Samociuk was co-author of 'Fraud Resistance: a Practical Guide' published by Standards Australia. He was also a contributing author to the book 'The Protection of Computer Software: Technology and Applications' published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the British Computer Society, and the 'Computer Security Reference Book' published by Butterworth Heinemann. Nigel Iyer is co-author of 'Fraud Resistance: a Practical Guide', and the author of a management novel 'The Tightrope'. He is currently developing a number of new dramatic productions and training films and is a Partner in the Septia Group (www.septiagroup.com). Helenne Doody is a fraud risk management specialist. She trained as a Chartered Accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers', working for seven years in their Forensic Services team both in the UK and Australia. She then worked in industry for a year as an internal auditor focusing on risk and internal control before becoming a specialist within the Chartered Institute of Management Accountancy's (CIMA) Innovation and Development department.

Seeing the warning lights before it's to late

To me, the most interesting chapter from this book is the one that deals with how to detect and handle fraud. According to the authors, the two most efficient ways of detecting fraud are:

Training employees to recognize and respond to the signals or "red flags" of possible fraud.
Pro-actively seeking out the red flags as a "pre-emptive health check".

While one's own employees are the best detectives in spotting signs of fraud, they may also be the worst, as it is human nature that most honest people simply cannot believe that a colleague, manager or third party is intentionally dishonest. However, the authors show that there are plenty of warning lights in behavior, transactions, IT-systems and corporate decisions that leave tell-tale signs that there could be more than meets the eye, if one cares to take a closer look.

Fraud detection must start with building a corporate culture where fraud is not accepted. That is something that takes time, and it is not easily established, particularly in large, multinational corporations, especially if there are offices or subsidiaries in countries and places where fraud is perhaps the order of the day. Nonetheless, I believe that using this book as guideline can be a small yet significant step in the right direction.
